Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Drunk Confections started when I was trying to find a way to spread a little joy without spreading COVID. Most of the desserts are named after friends – I would take their favorite cocktail as inspiration and then drop off the concoction on their doorstep. Soon, people started signing up for that week’s invention and things just snowballed. I started getting 50-60 orders a week. Everyone was so excited to have something to look forward to, and how can you go wrong with sugar and alcohol? I was a Lit major in college, and have an abondance of ridiculous stories, so I added a newsletter/blah blah blag to each week’s email. I’ve Marie Kondo’d the shit out of this pandemic… Can I swear on here? I’m gonna swear on here.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Nah. I’ve effed up a lot. But that’s how these things go – the hits stick with you while the compliments flit by. I chalk it up to growth, though. The hits stick with you because you can learn from them, make changes. I doubt myself every week. Every time I send an email. Every time I decide buttercream or Italian meringue. Every time someone says there’s too much/not enough of whatever… but fuck it. When it all started, I told myself if I wasn’t having fun with it, it wasn’t worth doing. If you wait until it’s perfect, you’ll never get started.
We’ve been impressed with Drunk Confections, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
So, my super-professional job is in Higher Education. I’ve been in Higher Ed. for (holy crap) 11 years. I’ve worked for Bard College, Simmons College, Harvard Business School, and now Arizona State University. I have my Master’s in Human Relations and Educational Psychology – a degree maybe a little more applicable to drinking than baking. Drunk Confections started as an outlet for my creative side and to keep me busy during quarantine. I never really thought it would take off in any way, but people seem to identify with the combination of sugar, alcohol, and terrible puns.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
You do you, boo. Haters gonna hate, vodka gonna potate. Everyone and their mom will try to give you advice. In the eternal words of Baz Luhrmann (based on an essay by Mary Schmich) “Be careful whose advice you buy but be patient with those who supply it. Advice is a form of nostalgia… Remember compliments you receive, forget the insults. If you succeed in doing this, tell me how.”
