Life & Work with Katarzyna Sadej

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katarzyna Sadej.

Hi Katarzyna, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I am an opera singer and professional vocalist, as well as a vocal coach, and I travel the world singing. When COVID hit, with all my traditional performances canceled, I embarked on a project called “Earth Singing”, where I sing live in incredible natural and wild locations, demonstrating the natural acoustics of these environments and celebrating the beauty of our planet.

The initial idea for “Earth Singing” was, in fact, inspired by the beauty of California and by the love I had for our State’s National and State parks. I wanted to create a project where I can use my voice to raise awareness for the fragile beauty of our planet. I often hike to the locations I choose and I create and produce these music videos myself with only the equipment I can carry.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
“Earth Singing” is a challenging project! It takes an enormous amount of time to produce each video, and many of the locations required me to hike extensive distances with weight on my back, sometimes at high altitudes and colder temperatures. All of these conditions are not ideal for an opera singer, so some of the locations were also vocal challenges and resilience exercises for me!

And I thought I would also add, that beyond my project -the career of an opera singer and most classical musicians is wrought with challenges. Unless you are financially secure through your family, it is an extremely difficult career to make a decent living in. It is also a career for which one must make many sacrifices. Many musicians forgo having children, and they forgo having comforts and freedoms in life that people with more secure incomes and lifestyles can more easily have. In the end, someone who potentially wants this kind of career should carefully weigh the pros and cons and should decide whether their love for the music is enough to withstand the challenges I just mentioned.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a versatile vocalist, creator, and artist, and I specialize in operatic singing. I am known for being a classical mezzo-soprano with a varied and interesting career spanning concert, opera, film, chamber music, oratorio, recital, and voice-over performance. I have also worked with many living composers and have performed many world premieres.

I am most proud of having used my voice to raise awareness for issues that matter most to me. Those issues include climate change and endangered species. I have sung for bonobo great apes at both San Diego Zoo and Wilhelma Zoo (Germany) and fundraise for their plight in the wild whenever I can. Now, with my “Earth Singing” project I am very proud to be creating an environmental art project which is raising awareness for our beautiful earth.

What sets me apart from others is my willingness to try new things and venture beyond the norm. This is both risky and fulfilling. Many people in my field would think I am crazy for focusing on “Earth Singing”. Most opera singers, for example, would not produce their own music videos outside, in the wild, and under physical duress! This requires a lot of time and effort on my part, but because I know I am using my voice, which I have trained for over 20 years now, to do something that helps our planet, it is all worth it to me.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
The industry of classical music is constantly changing. COVID was a huge disturbance for most classical musicians and for the organizations that employ them. It is my hope that the industry as a whole will shift toward more innovative performance practices, so that opera and classical music can flourish.
