Life & Work with Stefano Amelio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stefano Amelio.

Hi Stefano, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was born and raised in Rome, enjoying all of Italy’s foodie delights my whole life long. The best being those prepared by my Nonna! All of our homemade treats were made from clean and wholesome ingredients, including fresh milk and eggs sourced from our local farmers in the nearby villages. That goodness combined with the kind of love that only a grandmother can give, cultivated my love for food. Years later, myself and three of my childhood friends from Rome decided to bring that magic to the US! Five years on, and we are now causing a stir in the retail-bakery and fast-casual restaurant worlds with our individually packaged “desserts in a jar”. They are available in seven different flavors ranging from classic Italian to all-American favorites spun with an Italian twist! Our desserts in a jar are now sold throughout the US and are enjoying great attention in top-notch retail stores including Whole Foods Market, Bristol Farms, Ahold Delhaize, Kroger, Seven Eleven and also in privately owned deli’s and restaurants! We have only our customers to thank for our success (and Nonna, of course!).

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The biggest challenge we faced was trying to get our products into the market because it is very difficult to get people to try new things. Through constant perseverance and an unwavering desire to succeed, we managed to get a few distributors to get our desserts into big-name retail stores, and as they say, the rest is history. Also, and because all of the founders were foreigners living in Italy, it was challenging to keep the business afloat in the US as we all had different visions and priorities, which is of course natural. We also struggled to find the right sales team which gave us a few “false starts” in the beginning phases, but for the past two and a half years, we have had a strong and stable sales team that has taken the business to new heights.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I run the business from the production side to overseeing the final sales numbers. I love working in a team that works together to ensure the continued success of the business. Our working environment is fun and full of yummy taste-testing moments and a ton of laughs. I am an absolute foodie and love seeing people delight in the goodness of pure indulgent treats. Life is too serious and too short not to stop and take it all in, including the smallest and finest pleasures. I believe that food is an integral part of happiness!

What makes you happy?
I get true happiness from mindful breathing and meditating. I love living in San Diego and enjoying all the natural beauty and activities that it offers. I surf on the weekends and take it all in with my friends and my precious French Bulldog, Tara!
