Today we’d like to introduce you to Kathryn Rogers.
Kathryn, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
At the age of 16, my naturopathic doctor told me that in order to heal the ongoing pain and acne flare-ups I was experiencing due to chronic inflammation, I needed to follow a 100% refined sugar-free and grain free diet. Some 10 years later, after struggling to find delicious treat options that met my body’s needs, I launched Vivacious Dish and our Vivacious Desserts line to help others like me indulge in a healthy way. Our mission is to guide our customers to more positive relationships with their bodies, their community and Mother Earth through delicious, nourishing desserts and experiences.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The biggest hurdles we’ve faced have been producing treats that are easy for our customers to access regularly. The costs to entry for a food business are high – with safety certifications and commercial kitchen rentals/inspections. In addition, the gluten free/grain free market in San Diego is still growing, so finding certified gluten-free production spaces to create desserts has been challenging.
The good news is that a couple of new spaces are opening up this spring, so the line will be expanding from strictly online/direct sales to more partnerships with retail and storefronts in the near future. The goal is for our customers to be able to indulge when they want to, where they are! In addition, in our commitment to sustainability, finding truly eco-conscious packaging has been difficult. Figuring out how to walk the line between shelf stability and compostable packaging is an ongoing process.
Please tell us about Vivacious Dish.
We all deserve to eat well and feel well. Vivacious Dish and the Vivacious Desserts line nurture embodied conversations about indulgence – helping customers move from feelings of shame/addiction to self-love and empowerment when eating delicious treats. Our desserts are made from ingredients sourced locally and globally from farmers committed to environmental health and the well-being of workers, and they are made with all natural ingredients (no refined sugars or processed grains).
Having healed my own body’s autoimmune condition with diet, I hold space for others to heal and then use this foundation of whole health to drive other positive changes in their lives and their purpose in their work. When we feel our best, we can show up and do our best for ourselves and others.
We are proud to be there for customers to celebrate their special days with customized treats. We love creating decadent cakes and mini desserts for weddings, birthdays, bridal showers and everyday wins – featuring local flowers and fruits to add color and beauty, and using ingredients specialized for any diet.
Our customers tell us time and again that they love our desserts because they are delicious – the best they have ever tasted – and also because they always feel amazing after eating them. We hear all the time that people can taste the love in our treats. We are proud to infuse positive energy into our creations throughout every step in the production process, from sourcing ingredients to packaging and delivery.
A customer favorite is our Chakra Chocolate Truffles. Made with fair trade cacao, organic coconut butter, raw honey and herbs and spices, they come in seven distinct flavors to activate each energy center in the body. They are vegan and Paleo-friendly, and we offer them for sale online and for special events via a guided meditation experience.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Some of my earliest memories are spending time with my mom in her kitchen. I loved making pretzel animals with her. She was very health conscious, always keeping an eye on the latest health trends, so we made the pretzels with whole wheat flour. We would knead the dough together, and then form them into fun animal shapes to bake and then share with friends. I inherited my love of cooking from her, and those happy times making healthy food together fuel much of my passion today.
