Meet Lynn Waldman of Collaborative Family Law Group of San Diego

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lynn Waldman.

Lynn, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
The Collaborative Family Law Group of San Diego came together about 15 years ago; we are a work group of Family Law Attorneys, Certified Divorce Financial Analysts, Divorce Coaches and Child Specialists. Our different professions allowed us to have unique insight into how difficult divorce is for families, legally, financially and emotionally; the fallout lasting often for years.

Divorce is inherently traumatic and 15 years ago, it was fairly standard for most divorces to go through a contentious court process, leaving families broken financially, emotionally, and with children sometimes aligned with one parent. As professionals working within the court system, we knew there must be a better way to help couples end their marriage, keep their resources intact, maintain relationships with their children and civil co-parenting relationships with one another.

Our work group was formed to give divorcing couples choices about how they wished to end their marriage, while keeping their children, each other, their finances and their end goals at the forefront of their minds; Collaborative offers a family-centered way to divorce.

Clients are supported by their team in a family centered divorce. The first step is often consulting with one of our professionals, or attending our monthly workshop; Divorce Options-

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Some of our greatest obstacles have been getting the word out about the Collaborative Family Law Group of San Diego. We offer a great service to the community and families of San Diego, and however clients chose to divorce, we hope they consider our team approach. Collaborative may be costly in the beginning as there are numerous professionals to hire. However, we believe the benefit of keeping your divorce out of court, and maintaining all of the decision making is much less costly financially and emotionally.

Collaborative Family Law Group of San Diego – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Collaborative divorce is a client driven approach to ending your marriage. You have the benefit of keeping your divorce and all of your personal and child-sharing information out of court; clients make all of the decisions regarding the legal and financial aspects of their divorce, with the assistance and support of their team.

Each client has a Family Law Attorney, who offers legal advice, while keeping the soon to be ex-spouse in mind. Each client has a Divorce Coach to support emotion regulation, communication and parenting plans. Every case has one Certified Divorce Financial Analyst who is neutral in the case; they facilitate the team meetings with agenda items and support the process and progress of the case. When clients have children, there may also be a Child Specialist who meets with the children and assists the couple in formulating a parenting plan.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Some of our proudest moments include when couples come together and are able to make decisions about how they wish to proceed with their divorce; they determine how to share assets and their children. With coaching, clients are supported in communicating with one another. Clients may find themselves at an impasse. Through the support of their attorney and coach, they are able to look more deeply at their fears and consider the fears of their spouse, often allowing for movement on a previously intractable issue. Couples who could not have discussions previously, are now able to make proposals and talk about options; they learn to listen, they feel validated as they are heard by their soon to be ex-spouse, and by their team of professionals.
