Raven, it’s been too long since we last connected. Thanks so much for taking the time to share your thoughts with our community again. Some readers might have missed our prior conversations, so maybe you can kick things off for us with a quick intro?
My name is Raven Hilden. I am the Founder/CEO of MilVet, a nonprofit that assists veterans and deployed troops worldwide. I founded the nonprofit as a way to give back to the community and those who have served. As a military veteran’s spouse, I understand the complexities that veteran families face and have an admiration and respect for those who have worn the uniform to defend our nation and ensure our freedoms. MilVet has an amazing team of volunteers and supportive network who help make our mission possible.
What is MilVet?
MilVet is a 501c3 nonprofit that provides military and veteran support services. We have many programs to assist veterans locate resources, a fitness/rehabilitation program for veterans, a weekly recognition program for local veterans, and a military care package program. We aim to provide support where there are missing gaps in assistance and serve all veterans, all eras, all ratings. We believe that all who served committed to protecting our freedoms and we are committed to supporting them during after their service.
What are some ways you have helped veterans recently?
Covid has been a difficult time for all but especially our veteran community. This has been a busy time for the nonprofit as we have assisted with resumes, job searches, helped with food and basic necessities, partnered to help replace broken appliances, and more. We are hosting events to provide resource assistance and ways for veterans to connect with other veterans and the community to strengthen their connections and support system.
How do you support veteran’s families?
In addition to supporting the military member, we also support their families. Each year we provide gifts to military families, especially those in need. Last year alone, we ensured that over 60 children had holiday cheer. Some lost a parent during deployment, some were new to the community, others would not have had any gifts, and a few were homeless. We also helped provide meals and food assistance to those in need. Service members often do not serve alone, their family serves along with them.
Tell us more about your military care package program.
Our largest program is our monthly military care package program. We take special requests and each man or woman on our list receives a care package every month until they return home from deployment. We ship nutritious items, snacks, hygiene supplies, and letters of support from youth groups and the community. To date, we have supported thousands of men and women overseas at no charge to the military member or their families.
