Today we’d like to introduce you to Briana Smith.
Hi Briana, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
Growing up I have always been a creative person. With drawing as my passion, I feel as I got older, I have been able to explore different avenues. I progressed from sketching, to painting, to digital art. However, it has always been a dream of mine to bring my art to life. Throughout my college career, I made it my sole mission to always create and never lose that touch. My initial plan was to go to FIDM for visual communications to become a set designer for photoshoots and so forth, however, I put that to the side to pursue Biology at SDSU. I do not regret my decision, but now that I have completed that part of my journey, pursuing my artistic path is the direction I have chosen to take. I felt like event designing was the perfect for me, considering it was within the realm of what I wanted to do initially. Once I came to this realization, I have devoted my time and energy to it. It just feels right.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
So far it has been quite smooth in a sense I have been able to execute my ideas so far. Along with having a group of loved ones who have been supporting and sharing my work I feel like mentally I am in the right place to take this on. But of course, considering I am newer to this business I have struggled with getting exposure and marketing myself to the right audience. Using my social media outlets, I feel like with consistency and quality work I will be able to market my business well, however since it is the start of my journey this is by far my biggest challenge so far.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a sketch artist. I have tried many different things, but I believe I am most talented at sketching and have been elevating with digital art. When I was young, I learned so much from my father who is also an artist, as well as art books I used to gain knowledge about drawing and how to transfer my ideas from thoughts to paper. I feel like who I am as a person and my interests have set me apart from others because I feel like I can view something or have an idea and interpret/portray it many ways. This is why a lot of my art may come off as simple but have deeper meaning or a whimsical twist to it. I feel like it is a perfect representation of who I am. Within my art career, I am most proud of the fact that I never stopped creating no matter what I was going though or how discouraged I felt at times.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Waking up each day and getting to be authentically me is what makes me happy. For the longest time, I never felt this way about myself. I always wanted to be behind the scenes, never the main character, just doing what everyone expects of me. I feel like all my life I have put others before myself, so it makes me so happy to put myself first and do things that make me feel good. Practicing self-love and self-reflection has really changed my perception of not only myself but life in general. Although life seems hard 99% of the time with all of the curveballs thrown our way, I believe I have managed to find positive amongst the negative, and knowing I have made it this far by just being myself makes me happy.
