Rising Stars: Meet Delphine Bordas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Delphine Bordas.

Hi Delphine, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up in Paris, France. As soon as I completed my university studies, I knew my calling was to be a globe trotter. I found a corporate job that gave me the opportunity to live and work in different parts of Europe and South-East Asia. In 2012, I moved to Hawaii and pursued a different path, which led me to follow my passion for photography and nature. That is when I started my photography business. The beautiful California desert is now my home. I enjoy sharing my work at art shows and exhibitions in Palm Springs, San Diego, and Idyllwild.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Becoming a full-time artist took some time. It took me 20 years to find my photographic style and have the guts to show my work. I had a successful corporate career, financially rewarding, so starting from scratch as an artist and entrepreneur was a big leap of faith. While I was confident with my art, I had to learn the ropes of doing business in the art world. I feel very lucky to have started in Palm Springs and San Diego, where there are many artistic opportunities. I started small and feel there is so much room to grow here. One of my great surprises is to see how the art community is open to help you and support you. I have learned a lot from fellow artists, always ready to lend a hand and share their experiences.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I fell in love with black & white landscapes and nature photography. I used to enjoy spending hours in a dark room developing and printing my black & white prints. Now, using digital technology, I find the same excitement in transforming natural landscapes into timeless and vibrant scenes. After moving to the Californian desert, I started experimenting with color in my work. Who knew that the geometry of local cacti and plants could be perfect subjects for a color wonderland explosion! I am not into capturing reality. My photographs are my own vision of nature’s best. My black & white images have a spirit of their own, a sense of serenity and evasion. While my color images are full of fun and happy vibes.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
I have a fond memory of picking peaches and figs from the trees in my uncle’s orchard in Spain and eating them right then and there. I grew up in the city, so being able to be so close to nature was such a great experience for me.
