Today we’d like to introduce you to Blair Alley.
Hi Blair, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I suppose it all started with my love for skateboarding, photography, and music. all three of those things go hand in hand in hand and basically ruled my life starting in my early teens. I pursued skating on a sponsored and competitive level and immersed myself in photography and art classes in high school and college. Skateboarding as a career didn’t work out (I wasn’t nearly good enought), but I was lucky enough to eventually get an internship with a music magazine in San Diego which led to my dream job working for TransWorld SKATEboarding. This all took a long time but those are the broad strokes.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
No way. I don’t think anyone’s had a smooth road! In the beginning, like my early 20s, it took several years to get my foot in the door in the industries I wanted to work in. So I worked some rough restaurant jobs while spending all my money on film and developing and camera equipment, trying to improve my photography and reaching out to magazines I wanted to work for. It can be discouraging wondering if it’s ever going to work out, but you’ve got to try. You never know when you’ll get your break.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Currently, I’m a Content Director and Photographer. I produce and manage all the content on TransWorld SKATEboarding’s website and social channels. I do a ton of photography within and outside of skateboarding as well. I love to travel and spend time in New York so I’ve been doing fashion, music, and travel photography too. I try to keep myself busy with independent projects constantly.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
Working. Staying busy. Constantly improving your work. Creating a large body of work you can look back on and be proud of. Inspiring other artists. Encouraging younger up and coming skateboarders and photographers and helping them out however I can.
