Meet Amanda Nunes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Nunes.

Hi Amanda, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am from Brazil and my whole life there I worked in office jobs. My dream in USA when I first came was getting a good office job and be happy forever. However, when I was in college, I choose realistic drawing with charcoal on the art requirement class and everything changed. So then I knew I have found my passion. I was the best in my class because I really love doing it. After that, I thought that I need to find something to make money with art, so my friend who is tattoo artist help me to buy the materials, I got some courses, and I gave away many tattoos to practice. I was tattooing for about two years when I came to CA to visit, and I could realize that tattoo in San Diego is way bigger than in NY. In one month, I decided to move into San Diego, so I packed some things, sold and donated the rest and drove here with my little dog. I started working in a tattoo shop in Chula Vista on the next month. I had no idea I could open my own shop so soon, but I noticed that people was looking for me as their tattoo artist, so I decided it and in five months living in San Diego I opened it. It is small for now, but also very cozy, and I always try to make my clients feel special, I don’t want them remember only the tattoo itself but the whole experience while they are in my shop.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Tattoo artists, most of the time are not accessible to teach or share what they know, one of my difficulties specially in the beginning was find someone available to give me a chance and help you me to improve. Of course, I got many courses to learn which help me a lot, but I really appreciate the few professionals that helped personally.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a tattoo artist, I mostly do black and grey art, and the difference between the other artists is that I provide to people a relaxing environment with foot and shoulder massages, relaxing music, and relaxing smell to take out the tension of having a tattoo, I want them to have the beautiful art but at the same time I want them to have a great experience in my shop, and I have not seen it anywhere else.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I have so many dreams, and I am walking towards it. I want to be a very known tattoo artist. I want to have a bigger shop to give the opportunity to other people grow with me. I don’t feel I can be a teacher right now, but I help and encourage people as I can. Following the steps of one of my idols George Lange, I want to be able to help people from heart as he did to me.
