Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Ann Jordan.
Hi Kevin, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
As a child, one of the things that brought me joy was putting together outfits. I loved the puzzle of matching all the pieces and the delight that came from small details. The mix of clothes, make-up, and hair styling was intriguing to me, and I spent many winter days inside making my friends pose for photo shoots. This love of imagery and capturing the moment led me to be the editor of my high school yearbook for three years, however, when it came time for college, I decided to do something more ‘serious’.
Fast forward past a corporate career, I was burnt out and looking for a creative outlet, so I started working as a remote stylist at Stitch Fix. I was instantly hooked and loved that I could earn a living by helping women with their clothes! I wanted to offer my clients more than just a box of clothes each month, so I started my own styling business.
As I started working one-on-one with women all over the world, I started researching how, where, and from what my own clothes were made. My mind was blown when I realized that the majority of our clothes are made from polyester – a manmade material that comes from oil. As I discovered how terrible the fashion industry is for the planet, and how stressful it is for the average woman to feel ‘put together’, I realized that I could help women reclaim their style by curating a closet that is kind to the planet, animals, and people.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No road is perfectly smooth, but I have had the good fortune of very supportive family and friends. Along the way, one of the biggest challenges for me has been recognizing my niche of sustainable style.
As a personal stylist, you think you can help ‘anyone’ and end up helping no one – or at least not having as great of an impact. It took me some time to figure out how to differentiate my services from other stylists – and find the women who I could best serve.
We all have to get dressed every day in some capacity and most people want that process to be as easy as possible while still feeling authentic and like their best selves. My clients want to buy pieces that reflect their personal styles, are good quality, and will last for many years but don’t have the time or are overwhelmed by all the options. They want to look good and feel good – without wondering if their clothes are negatively impacting people, the planet, or animals.
As I’ve honed in on my niche, I have felt so much more authentic in how I show up for myself and my clients – it is worth doing the hard work!
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
As a personal stylist and Style Coach, I help busy women reclaim their style and confidence! I simplify the process of curating a thoughtful closet – one that doesn’t harm people, planet or animals.
I recently told a friend that I’m saving the planet one closet at a time. What started as a joke has become my passion. There are so many ways that the fashion industry is harmful, but the industry is complex and opaque and largely unregulated – and most women do not have the time to deep dive into all of these issues before buying a dress!
Creating a thoughtful, sustainable style not only helps a woman feel confident, but it saves her money (and helps the environment) in the long run. When we know and define our personal style – I call this a Style Manifesto – choosing what to keep in our closets as well as what to buy becomes so much easier. Once your closet is full of clothes that reflect your best self, getting dressed is instantly easier.
This year, I curated a series of book and style events that will be held at Rising Co in Oceanside, California. The goal is to bring women together and create community around conscious style. Each event has an associated book, as well as guest speakers, wine, snacks, and an activity that will help create a sustainable wardrobe (all materials are provided).
The first event, Manifestos + Moodboards was on February 23, followed by Sip + Swap on May 18, Dress Dye + Pie on August 31, and Care + Rewear on October 26. Details here: https://www.risingco.co/collections/events/products/reclaim-your-style-book-event-series-with-kevin-ann-of-tailored-stylist
