Today we’d like to introduce you to Cheryl Rogers
Hi Cheryl, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am originally from East Oakland, CA. I graduated from Alhambra High School (Martinez, CA) in 1993 and immediately joined the Navy. By way of the United States Navy, I found myself in beautiful San Diego! I served eight years and during my service, I met and married my husband, Dominic Rogers. We have been married for 30 years and he is one of my biggest supporters! He also served in the Navy for 21 years, retiring in San Diego and now working for the Veterans Administration. We have raised our two children, Ashleigh, 28, and Justin, 19, in this beautiful destination.
My childhood was no cakewalk, and I grew up in a single-parent household. My father, was not present due to a terrible drug addiction. Present day he and I have come to a place of healing, understanding, and grace to strengthen our parental bond. I also struggled in school due to a learning disability. I am so fortunate that even though there were alot of elements I had no control over I was able to persevere. This is why I have always worked hard and strived to provide more for my family and create opportunities that I worked hard to get for myself.
I have worked in many industries in San Diego County and am closely tied to my community and represent San Diego everywhere I go. Currently, I hold the position as Manager, Executive Administration & Corporate Events at Palomar Holdings, Inc. There I support the CEO and his team and source and curate all of the corporate meetings and events. I have worked in other fields in San Diego as well (Education, medical, pharmaceutical, insurance, and print media). I am now an entrepreneur creating income and generational wealth streams by doing things that bolster my community, mental health, and general well-being. My experiences have shaped my life and created a roadmap for my goals. My husband, children, family, and friends are my foundation on this journey called life:-)
I love to have fun and experience new things. My going them is “experiences”! I never meet a stranger, and try to leave positive energy in every place I inhabit. My job affords me the ability to travel places far and wide and meet amazing people. All of these encounters are impactful and create the rich beautiful complicated canvas of my life.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My road has not been smooth. I have faced health challenges (ovarian cancer), struggles with weight management, menopause, and extreme loss (death of close family and friends) to name a few. One thing that my late mother instilled in me was to never allow my environment and circumstances to dictate my outcome. These challenges have been bumps in the road but have caused me to dig deep and be resilient and have provided encouragement for others going through similar challenges.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I have been an Executive Assistant to C-Suite Executives for over 25 years. Over the years my role has expanded and has always included meeting and event planning. I take pride in specializing in measurable results and creating amazing experiences through creative events.
I often theme everything I do and share with others to encourage buy-in and connectivity. Whether I am planning an important Board Meeting, Investor Day, Leadership Summit, Happy Hour, Holiday Party, or Incentive Trip, my goal is to make it completely experiential.
Through my “day job” I have come to expand my network far and wide through the sourcing and planning of meetings and events, both domestically and internationally. As a result, I am very connected to all things hospitality.
During the pandemic, I was searching for ways to stay connected to my hospitality partners, friends, and family, all while dealing with life during this global shared experience. To stay connected during quarantine and work through the emotions I created a podcast, called “All About The Experiences: Living Without Limits” and launched on my late mother’s birthday (Juneteenth) in honor of her amazing life.
Through my podcast I used my platform to connect with other influential people and have them share their life story and talk about how they were managing during the pandemic. Since this time my podcast has grown into a lifestyle brand.
One of the things that sets me apart is that I never limit myself. I am open to all experiences and take life lessons as a blessing and compass to navigate life and connect to great people.
Being open to new experiences has also allowed me the space to venture out as an entrepreneur. I am currently co-branding under the name “The Wellness Gathering” with my business partner, Angela Grant and we are curating wellness retreats. Our mission is to empower our guests to prioritize their own self-care, develop mental and physical wellness, create plans for future prosperity, and build meaningful connections. We provide resources and support to help those who have a desire to better humans and become part of our community.
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
One of the biggest lessons I learned during the Covid-19 Crisis is that you can take nothing for granted. Sometimes I feel like the pandemic was a blessing in disguise to allow us to slow down, take inventory, and spend quality time with the people who are in our immediate bubble.
I spent more time getting to know my family and made great efforts to connect via Teams, Zoom, FaceTime, or doing socially-distance drive-bys.
I lost family members during the pandemic and we were not able to do a traditional burial. With each loss I experienced during this time I made it a point to be ever vigilant in connecting with the people in my circle and giving them their flowers every opportunity I have.
