Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrea Racca.
Hi Andrea, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Bobboi Gelato was born from a deep love for authentic gelato.
Our journey began in Italy where we decided to leave our cozy big company jobs to start and adventure with gelato, with the belief that gelato is more than just a dessert – it’s an experience that brings people together.
We decided to focus on using the finest, freshest ingredients, the lowest process and the highest quality.
We spent years selecting and establishing relations with our local producers and suppliers to create unique and innovative flavors.
Each scoop had to tell a story of tradition, creativity, and passion for quality.
Our name, “Bobboi,” comes from a Sardinian dialect word that means “sweet” or “joy”. It’s a nod to our roots and the inspiration we draw from the Mediterranean.
At Bobboi, our mission is simple: to craft gelato that makes people smile and sparks joy in every bite.
We’re proud to be part of the San Diego community, sharing a piece of Italian culture while embracing the vibrant spirit of Southern California.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting a small business in a competitive market like San Diego required us to overcome numerous hurdles, from securing our locations with no credit history behind us to deciding to go all in with our choices.
A beautiful story of coincidence and perseverance is how we found the first location in La Jolla. I saw the late and beloved landlord Mr. Maroof hanging the “for rent” sign in front of our future shop on the first day I arrived in San Diego to look around.
He liked us where we were nobody and after seven months we were ready to open our doors
There were times when balancing tradition with innovation felt like a delicate dance, especially when, a first in the US, we decided not to show products basing our interactions of true flavor rather than appearance.
Also, like many small businesses, we’ve had to weather uncertainties – from navigating economic shifts to adapting during the pandemic.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
We are San Diego’s gelato! We have become the first thought when one wants to have this great frozen dessert.
We were helped (and served it) by making it to the Yelp Top 100 Places to Eat in 2015 https://blog.yelp.com/news/yelps-top-100-places-to-eat-in-the-us-for-2015/
We are proud to be simple, to give pure flavor to our experience
