Flashes & Strokes: a Tale of Two Mediums

The digital and traditional arts are thriving in San Diego. From newer, technology based media like photography and digital art to more traditional art, there is so much to see, explore and learn from in Southern California. Through our Flashes and Strokes series, we’d like to celebrate artists from both worlds: traditional and digital.

Looking for flower pictures for the BorregoArt Institute Flora and Fauna show, the shape of this Angel’s Trumpet struck me. Known as datura innoxia, this is the non-poisonous relative of the sacred datura and grows well throughout this dry area. I was thinking of the grace and beauty we saw this summer in Vienna and remembering my father and brother we lost in the last two years. Visually, it felt like the beautifully irregular outline needed at once a grid and to evoke the highest levels of artistic culture. So I added images of the Spanish riding school, votives in St Stephen’s cathedral, Viennese architecture and a light art installation. . . . . . #abstractartorg #natureisart #californiaoutside #arid #collecmag #desertflowers #contemporaryphotography #phroommagazine #issuuloves #borregoartinstitute #abstractmag #modernartwork #modernartists #editgrammer #digitalart #artmag #thisaintartschool #dqzine #collectif_polygone #useformat #imaginarymagnitude #paradisexmagazine #californianature #colorful #midnightsafari #eyeshotmag #pixsoulmag #dreamermag #irimages #worldedited

Finding a moment of peace above the clouds in Big Sur. Everything was drenched in a warm golden light and a gentle breeze made the grass dance around. It was as if the earth was gently breathing, in and out and the colors were so vivid you could almost taste them. The clouds were thick and fluffy, as if you could step out onto them and swim towards the horizon. Crickets chirped and birds sang a tune as the sun made its final farewell and dipped below the sea of clouds. Nothing finer – sunset bliss. . . . . . . . . . . . #yoga #asana #bliss #peace #peaceful #beauty #color #bigsur #oceanview #california #sun #sunset #beautiful #heal #gooutside #healing #vsco #goexplore #photooftheday #love #photography #rei1440project #optoutside #photographer #sandiegophotographer #sandiego #colortherapy #lonelyplanet #vscocam #lightroom

Oh. My. LANTA 🙌🏻 This was such an amazing privilege getting to witness and photograph Griffin’s proposal to Maggie!! I probably wasn’t as nervous as he was, but I think I was prettttty close (hands were full on SHAKING as I screwed my lens onto my camera). _ About a week before, Griffin called me and explained how he wanted to propose—at sunset, on top of cliffs over looking the ocean. Beautiful, right? Turns out, the day he was going to propose a huge rain storm came through San Diego and the trails to the cliffs were closed (the ONE TIME it rains here 😩). _ This guy was not👏🏻backing👏🏻down👏🏻. He decided he would only wait one extra day, and then rain or shine, he was going to propose to Maggie. To quote one of my favorite movies, “when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with someone, you want the rest of your life to start right now.” Luckily the rain held off, and he proposed at one of their favorite beach spots. It was absolutely perfect 👌🏻 _ Oh! And casually on the way back, Griffin mentioned that he had also booked a surprise trip to the Midwest to go visit Maggie’s friends and family. He had even secretly coordinated with her boss to get her vacation days approved. Just, what?! _ So despite a rainstorm in San Diego and a polar vortex in the Midwest, these two got engaged and were able to take a trip to celebrate with loved ones. _ 👇🏻Double tap if you think Griffin absolutely rocked this proposal!!👇🏻 Congratulations Griffin + Maggie! It was such an honor to get to capture this amazing moment for you! ❤️

Because you’re never fully dressed without a smile! I honestly wish I could go back to my wedding and do it differently. I’d wear my hair down, I’d probably elope and spend all my budget on flowers photography and a videographer haha. I got married right as Pinterest was coming out, so I didn’t have the inspiration at my fingertips like brides do today! I’ll just have to live vicariously through y’all! 👰🏻 Host:@kayleejuliannaphotography @theadventurousworkshop Calligraphy: @something.lettered Floral: @thefloraltique Makeup: @beautywithsarahmae Hair: @justlago Rentals: @3littlebirdseventplanning Wedding Dress: @lulusweddings Models: @shaaaebutaaa @__seanmurphy__ Arch: @swoonhomeliving Chairs/Film: @onethousandeyesproductions •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• #loveandwildhearts #radlovestories #darlingmovement #theheartcaptured #photobugcommunity #instagood #momentsofmine #isntshelovely #livethelittlethings #pursuepretty #thehappynow #dirtybootsandmessyhair #southerncaliforniaphotographer #californiaphotographer #bethmillerphotographey #momentsmatter #joshuatree #bohemianstyle #theadventurousworkshop #weddingstyle #desertwedding
