We recently had the chance to connect with Ashley Cipolletti and have shared our conversation below.
Good morning Ashley, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
One of the biggest misunderstandings about my work is the assumption that dog behavior problems are simply the owner’s fault. I often hear this unspoken judgment, as if struggling with a dog means you’ve somehow failed. In reality, behavior is far more complex than that. It’s shaped by a combination of physiology, environment, learning history, and emotional regulation—for both the dog and the human. My work focuses on bringing all of those pieces together: understanding the dog as a whole being while also helping owners regulate their own emotions so they can show up as calm, consistent, and supportive partners. At its core, my business isn’t about blame—it’s about building healthier, more resilient relationships between dogs and their people.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Ashley Cipolletti, the founder of Co-Regulated K-9s. My path here weaves together psychology, animal training, animal shelter work, and my own journey with chronic illness. What I’ve learned through all of it is that every one of us—human or animal—wakes up each day with a different ‘battery life,’ shaped by our physiology, past experiences, and environment. In my own healing, I’ve seen how chronic pain, even when invisible to others, can keep the body in a state of stress and impact everything from mood to sleep to resilience. And I couldn’t help but notice how similar this is to what I witnessed working with dogs in shelters—where unmet needs and constant stress were mislabeled as ‘behavior problems.’
That realization became the heartbeat of Co-Regulated K-9s. My work is about honoring that complexity, seeing beyond surface behavior, and helping both people and dogs build the bandwidth to meet life’s challenges with more calm, confidence, and connection. What makes my brand unique is that it’s not just about training dogs or correcting behavior—it’s about understanding the intersection of physiology, psychology, and relationships, and making both species feel seen and heard. Right now, I’m excited about building a platform that brings these ideas to more people through courses, coaching, and community—because when we see the bigger picture, we not only change behavior, we change lives.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
I think bonds are broken in the tiny, everyday moments. When you say you’ll be there and you’re not. When you interrupt someone in the middle of sharing their passion. When you don’t look up from your phone to truly connect. Trust erodes not in dramatic betrayals, but in these small signals that say, ‘You don’t matter as much as you thought you did.’
And yet, those same small moments are also what restore bonds. By showing up when you say you will. By keeping your word. By noticing when you’ve interrupted and taking the time to apologize. By owning the impact of your actions, even if you didn’t intend to hurt someone. Bonds are rebuilt when we choose to be present, to listen deeply, and to show ourselves as dependable, trustworthy, and even joyful to be with. Connection isn’t about perfection—it’s about consistently choosing each other in the tiny everyday moments.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Suffering has taught me lessons that success never could. I’ve faced challenges since I was a child—watching my mom fall into depression after her father died, feeling invisible and internalizing that absence. In adolescence, I moved to a new school, where I was finally noticed, but also bullied. I had early relationships where I gave everything—loyalty, empathy, effort—only to feel unseen, unvalued, and overlooked.
Those experiences forced me to lose myself, confront the darkest parts of life, and ultimately find myself again. Each time I’ve faced hardship, I’ve discovered a well of resilience, grit, and inner wisdom I didn’t know I had. I’ve learned to trust my intuition, persevere through uncertainty, pivot when needed, and approach life with curiosity and courage. Success can teach you skills, accolades, or comfort, but suffering teaches you strength, depth, and the unshakable belief that you can keep going, no matter what
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What do you believe is true but cannot prove?
I believe we are all connected in ways we can’t see or measure. That energy, intention, and presence ripple out and affect people, animals, and situations around us in ways that are subtle but real. I also feel that there are moments, relationships, or opportunities that show up in our lives according to a kind of divine timing or higher guidance—paths aligning in ways we can’t always explain. I can’t prove it scientifically, but I sense it every day in the way people, dogs, and circumstances converge when the timing is right, or in the way intuition guides choices that end up being exactly what was needed
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope the story people tell about me begins with the little girl I was—as an animal-obsessed kid with a huge heart and boundless empathy, always noticing the overlooked, the shy, the hurting. Even then, I was curious, adventurous, and fiercely loyal, wanting to care for and understand every creature I encountered.
As I grew, life tested me in ways that demanded resilience and courage. I faced challenges, loss, and uncertainty, and I learned to trust myself and my intuition, even when the path forward wasn’t clear. That same fearlessness carried me into adulthood—I’ve leapt into adventures without a safety net, traveled, explored, and embraced the unknown with curiosity and grit.
Along the way, I cultivated playfulness, silliness, and joy, never losing sight of laughter even in hard moments. But above all, I poured love into those around me—people and animals alike—hoping to help them feel seen, heard, and understood. I hope people remember me as someone who lived fully, loved deeply, and moved through life with courage, heart, and an unwavering belief that connection, curiosity, and compassion are the true measures of a life well-lived.
