An Inspired Chat with Cindy Olivas of Lemon grove, CA

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Cindy Olivas. Check out our conversation below.

Hi Cindy, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
The beach! It’s summer time in San Diego, and all I want to do to enjoy it is enjoy the warm sand and perfect weather in the beach

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi there! I’m Cindy a full-time lash artist, educator, and your go-to hype girl for all things beauty business.
I specialize in custom lash sets that highlight each client’s unique features. I also teach lash artists how to turn their talents into thriving businesses. Right now, I’m working on expanding my educational offerings, continuing to building a supportive lash community, and sprinkling a little extra love and magic everywhere I go

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
I was just a girl with dreams, maybe not as big as they are now, but big enough to feel a little lost between what I wanted and what felt possible. I knew I wanted to be the first in my family to have a job that gave me both joy and freedom. And I’ve always loved the feeling of making women feel beautiful.

When I was younger and minimum wage was $9 an hour, I’d tell my parents, “I’m going to make $30 an hour and only work part-time.” The first time I actually hit that milestone, it hit me: I did it! Then I hit more milestones that I never in my wildest dreams would think of achieving.
I have merged my dreams with my reality, that was an early impactful moment in my career lit a fire in me that still burns today and keeps me going

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
When my mom was battling leukemia, I almost gave up. All I wanted was to sit next to her and be there every second. Taking clients during that time was incredibly hard. I love what I do, but I was emotionally drained and heartbroken.
I had attended a lash conference, the support from the lash community reminded me why I chose this path in the first place. For freedom, flexibility, and purpose. That forced me to really look at my business. I raised my prices, reduced my hours, and created space in my life to care for my mom until her very last breath. It wasn’t easy, but I’ll forever be grateful that my business allowed me to show up for her in the way she deserved

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
“Lashes are just a side hustle.”
I hear this all the time and honestly, I hate it.

So many people believe (or are told) that beauty services are just a stepping stone to a “real” career. And listen, if lashes are a stepping stone for you, that’s totally okay. But let’s not ignore the truth: this is a real career if you want it to be.

If you love being a lash artist or stylist, you can absolutely build a life around it, a profitable, fulfilling, and flexible one. This industry opens so many doors. Don’t let anyone downplay your dream.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope people can say that I made a positive impact on their lives, whether it’s personally, professionally, or in a general way. I hope I did or said something that helped them and created a good lasting memory for them and for my lash community, I hope to help others to gain strength, confidence and growth.
