An Inspired Chat with Clinton Gorham Sr.

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Clinton Gorham Sr.. Check out our conversation below.

Clinton, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
What’s often misunderstood about my business is the assumption that I’m simply a designer who can be boxed into whatever creative task someone needs at the moment. That mindset is not only limiting, it’s also disrespectful to the depth of the work I do. I’m far more than a pair of hands for visuals. I’m a brand consultant whose passion is helping entrepreneurs believe in their own genius and build brands from the inside out. My work is rooted in strategy, clarity, and transformation, not just aesthetics. When people see me only through a narrow lens, they miss the full scope of the value I bring.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Clinton Gorham, the founder and creative director of The Gorham Agency, an award-winning branding studio based in San Diego. What began as my passion project has grown into a full-service agency helping entrepreneurs and organizations build bold, authentic brands from the inside out.

I’m more than a designer. I’m a brand consultant who believes strategy and mindset come first, then creativity. At the heart of our work is helping people see and believe in their own genius. We use affirming strategies and beautifully crafted media to transform brands into movements.

My journey from the Marine Corps and law enforcement into creative entrepreneurship shaped the way I lead and serve. Today, The Gorham Agency partners with visionaries who want clarity, confidence, and a brand that truly reflects their story and purpose. We’re not just building visuals. We’re building belief.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
As a child, I truly believed I was invincible. I knew in my head that I was human and fragile, but I didn’t fully understand how quickly life can change until I survived a heart attack and cardiac arrests. In the twinkling of an eye, I realized I could be here one moment and gone the next. That experience shifted everything for me. Now I live with the awareness that tomorrow will be what it’s going to be, and the most important thing I can do is live fully and purposefully today.

What’s something you changed your mind about after failing hard?
The last time I changed my mind about something important was when I realized hiding behind my business was actually holding it back. For a long time I let fear convince me that if people really saw me, they might not want to work with me. But the moment I decided to step out from behind the brand and become the face of my business, everything shifted. Now I stand boldly in who I am, in my abilities, my expertise, and the results I deliver. That change of mindset not only transformed my confidence but also the way people connect with my work.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
One of the biggest lies my industry tells itself is that there’s enough room at the table for everyone to eat. That sounds nice, but it’s not always true. The reality is that some of us will have to go and build our own tables. Every industry has gatekeepers, including the Branding + Creative industry. Pretending they don’t exist does a disservice to up-and-coming professionals. We need to be honest about the barriers, equip people with real strategies, and encourage them to carve out their own space when the door isn’t open.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: If you retired tomorrow, what would your customers miss most?
If I retired tomorrow, I believe my customers would miss what I call “The Gorham Experience.” We’ve built more than a service; we’ve created a journey where every client feels seen, supported, and inspired. From strategy to design, we aim to make every interaction top-tie, thoughtful, personal, and transformative. That level of care and intentionality is what truly sets us apart, and it’s what I think people would miss most.
