We’re looking forward to introducing you to Deveney Wells-Gibson. Check out our conversation below.
Deveney, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What battle are you avoiding?
A battle that I am avoiding is making pivots, when I know taking those pivots is the right thing to do. I am an extremely loyal and committed individual that is learning that sometimes I have to learn to let go and make space for other opportunities that are trying to come my way. This is a battle I face with my business, as I learn to let go of certain things/practice areas.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Deveney Wells-Gibson. I am a family law / divorce attorney in San Diego, CA. I have my own firm, Wells-Gibson Family Law, that has exploded with business the moment we opened our doors in March 2021. What has made me unique and special is that although I am grateful for the love, support, loyalty, and trust I have received for my firm, I find more passion on the other spectrum, in helping people strengthen their marriages, to avoid ending up in my divorce office.
As such, we have our second up and coming business, The Prenup Queen, who is focused on helping couples have hard, uncomfortable conversations surrounding money, finances, assets, and debts, so they can start their marriage off on a solid foundation and with a game plan to build the dream life and marriage they desire. The Prenup Queen has a course called Love Meets Wealth, which we liken to “Financial Premarital Counseling” to help strengthen marriages and lower the divorce rate.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
The part of me that has served my purpose has been my litigation side of the work I’ve done through Wells-Gibson Family Law. It is a side of me that needs to now be released, in order to make way and make space for The Prenup Queen and Love Meets Wealth.
Truthfully, it has been a hard realization for me, because litigation is where I started. It’s currently all I know, but I also know that it doesn’t provide me as much purpose as I had hoped. And knowing me, I am a purpose-driven individual. I find so much purpose, as well as passion, with The Prenup Queen.
What fear has held you back the most in your life?
The fear of not being good enough.
This fear mostly comes from my Type A, perfectionist side. I want things to be done right and to be done well. I don’t like mediocrity and want to give everyone my best. However, I have also realized that constantly giving my all is extremely draining, and that requires me to make sure I have sufficient recovery time to recharge.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What truths are so foundational in your life that you rarely articulate them?
Not everything has a “right way” or “wrong way”, especially when it comes to life. There are some many avenues that we can take to get to the same destination. It’s like booking a flight to Costa Rica. There’s so many days, times, and flight options you can take to get to where you’re trying to go. Some may be cheaper. Some may be faster. Some may be “better” or “worse”, which is subjective and viewed differently to so many people.
All in all, when it comes to your life, you choose what’s “best” for you, and truthfully that’s all that matters.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What do you think people will most misunderstand about your legacy?
That my work was to set couples up for divorce. However, that’s just the general misconception of prenuptial agreements due to how society has painted prenups. People don’t know what they don’t know. So, it’s really an educational piece, and an ability to be open minded to the benefits a prenup provides.
Regardless, I stand confident that my work will find the people it’s meant to find, and I can rest in that.
