An Inspired Chat with Grace Scott of Kensington

We recently had the chance to connect with Grace Scott and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Grace, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What is a normal day like for you right now?
We welcomed a second child just 2 months ago so life is very busy at home with a newborn, a toddler, and running a business! Most days are filled with keeping up with my toddler or getting work done while carrying a napping baby on me. They are busy and joyful!

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Grace! I grew up in a small mountain town outside Yosemite, so much of my upbringing was spent outside. I have always loved flowers but really fell in love when I started working with them just after college. I worked for a handful of different florists in San Diego for several years while also flowering for weddings and events myself. For Keeps Florals launched in 2023 after playing around with flower pressing as a hobby. We now preserve flowers for people across the country, mostly after their weddings! Preserving clients sentimental flowers is so meaningful to us.

For Keeps offers pressed flower frames in all different shapes and sizes. We also offer to put pressed flowers in custom jewelry and ring dishes. Our process takes up to 12 weeks so there is a lot of care and love that goes in to each piece.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who taught you the most about work?
My mom definitely taught me the most about work and working hard. One of her rules we had growing up was that once you start something, you had to finish it. No matter how much you loved or hated that thing, you had to finish it. I remember insisting that we signed up for things and then on occasion not wanting to go to a swim meet or church camp, but my mom always reminded us that we were the ones that wanted this in the first place. I feel that this instilled good work ethic and allowed us to feel like we earned the reward at the end. Even with getting my first job, there were days I just did not want to go to work but after showing up I’d remind myself that this is what I signed up for and working for that paycheck was always worth it!

When you were sad or scared as a child, what helped?
I have a twin sister and a very close family. When I was sad or scared as a child I could always go to my family – I still can! Growing up with a twin really made me a people person and I feel like I always reach out to my close friends and family when I am in need. They always help me through tough or scary times.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Whose ideas do you rely on most that aren’t your own?
My husband is always challenging me with ideas or getting me out of my comfort zone. I love that we can go back and forth on ideas. We are from very different backgrounds and grew up in very different parts of California so I feel like we are able to have unique perspectives on things which I really appreciate!

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. When do you feel most at peace?
I feel most at peace when I have accomplished a good work and home life load and I just have time to really be in the moment with my family and friends.
