An Inspired Chat with Hilary Dufour

Hilary Dufour shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Good morning Hilary, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
Painting big murals! It’s a full body and mind workout.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m an artist and muralist focusing on ecology of the American Southwest. My art explores the relationships between species in their shared environment. I’ve collaborated with nonprofits and local businesses to utilize art as a means to help build community, make art more accessible and bring awareness to native species that we share this land with.

I also work full-time as a geographic information systems (GIS) analyst, focusing heavily on emergency management. When I’m not working on art or GIS, I try to be active and spend time outdoors.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
Wearing pink cowboy boots on my first day of kindergarten.

Is there something you miss that no one else knows about?
I miss the days when we weren’t inundated with advertisements everywhere we look.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
Work hard and you’ll succeed. It’s an oversimplification and ignores many other factors, especially privilege.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
I’d love to stop spending so much time staring at screens and focus my energy on in-person interactions.
