An Inspired Chat with Josquin Des Pres

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Josquin Des Pres. Check out our conversation below.

Josquin, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
My day begins at 6:30 a.m., and I spend the first 30 minutes catching up on emails and messages—starting with Europe, then moving on to Latin America, and finally the East Coast, since I work closely with artists from these regions. After that, I dedicate about an hour to a combination of meditation and exercise. My routine includes stretching, tai chi, some aerobic activity, and light weight training. While the training is light, I never skip a day—consistency is essential. I finish my morning with a simple breakfast: typically one or two hard-boiled eggs and some fresh fruit.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Josquin Des Pres. I’m a composer and producer with over four decades of experience in the music industry. I’ve collaborated with songwriters and artists such as Bernie Taupin, Jason Mraz, Michael Natter, members of the Gipsy Kings, Laura Marano, and several American Idol alumni, including Jax, Makayla Phillips, and Rayvon Owen. Over the past 40 years, I’ve written and placed over 300 songs, produced more than 100 albums, composed music for over 40 major television shows, developed music software and apps, authored multiple books on music, and launched several music-related business ventures.
Based in San Diego, I run Track Star Studios, where I specialize in producing solo artists and singer-songwriters, with a focus on singles and EPs. I also serve as CEO of Utonium Music, a label I founded with music industry associate Roxanne Stone. The label is dedicated to cross-cultural collaborations through select global releases. Through our Songs Without Borders initiative, we bring together internationally recognized artists and high-reach influencers to create music that transcends borders, languages, and genres.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
Before the world told me who I had to be, I already knew I wanted to be in music—both as a musician and on the business side. I grew up in a small village in the south of France and had my eyes on California from the time I was 12. By age 18, I moved to Paris to pursue music seriously, and soon after, I relocated to Los Angeles to take it to the next level. Music has always been my focus—creatively and professionally.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
If I could say one kind thing to my younger self, it would be this: success is a journey, not a destination. I started out chasing the idea of “making it,” but over time I learned that real achievement is about the process, the growth, and the experiences along the way. I’d also tell myself to focus more on songwriting rather than trying to be the best instrumentalist. Great songs open doors. Being a skilled bass player is valuable, but without strong songs, those skills only go so far. Songwriting is where the real magic—and lasting impact—comes from.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Is the public version of you the real you?
I’m not sure how people see me, but I hope it reflects who I really am—hardworking, persistent, and determined. I’ve gained valuable experience over time and always aim to keep learning and moving forward.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
Absolutely—I believe I was born to do what I do and I am grateful my parents supported my goals, even when others around me didn’t have that same freedom
