An Inspired Chat with Kai Diaz

Kai Diaz shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Kai, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What is a normal day like for you right now?
Normal day starts with walking with my dog and feeding her breakfast. Then making a cup of coffee while i stare out the window to see what the light is doing. I dig into my work emails and meetings. Work on any current client projects for my design studio. Finish up any computer or desk work by 5pm… If the weather permits, I pick up a camera and go for a walk until all the light is gone.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Kai Diaz. I’m a photographer, based in North County San Diego. I also own a design studio, Kai Diaz Creative. As a photographer, I’m focused on documenting everything from the mundane to historic events. In the design studio, my role is owner, principal, and lead designer.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
I would say my dear friend Marcelo. I’ve always been a photographer, before I even knew that I was. As a kid, I was infatuated with documenting all the moments that were happening around me. And the nerd in me, loved the designs of cameras…

Marcelo, gave me the confidence to pursue a career as an artist. He has been all over the world and comes from a family of creatives. So when he told me that I can make a career as a fine art photographer, I believed him… and I finally saw it for myself.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
You’ll love who you become.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?
This didn’t take me long to think about.

I’m not sure what the public sees me as… but I think the public me is the real me…

if you visit my social media page, I don’t really talk much… I’m pretty reserved when it comes to talking out loud. I’m more of an observer… Which probably helps me keep the passion in visual arts.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
waiting.
