We’re looking forward to introducing you to Kailee Ray. Check out our conversation below.
Good morning Kailee, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
One of my proudest recent moments was helping a customer whose dog had been diagnosed with Stage 4 kidney disease. The vet gave her only a short time left, and she refused to give up. Her dog wouldn’t eat the prescribed Hills diet, so together we looked at the parameters her vet provided—protein levels, phosphorus, and other key factors. From there, we built a proper diet with supportive supplements to help stabilize her condition. Not only has she already outlived the vet’s original timeline, but she’s also thriving with great spirits. This experience makes me proud of what I do—helping pet parents nourish their pets with better nutrients, offering natural options for healing, and educating the community so pets can live healthier, happier lives.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Kailee, and I am the owner of Pet Nutrition Center in Carlsbad and the President of Peaceful Paws Recovery. My entire life has been dedicated to animals—I could never imagine a career path outside of them. Animals have given me purpose, and I owe so much of who I am to them. My mission is to help every animal I can, whether through proper nutrition, rescue, or one day, a sanctuary. At both my store and rescue, our focus is always on giving animals the best chance to thrive and live happy, healthy lives.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
It’s funny—looking back, I don’t think anyone truly saw me before I began to see myself. Even now, at 31, I’m not sure I fully do. For much of my life, people saw my heart but often took advantage of it, or used me for their own benefit. Like many, I went through times of feeling defeated. Deep down, I’ve always just wanted to love and help, but I rarely felt like anyone really saw all of me—until more recently.
The only beings who have consistently seen me for who I truly am are animals. They recognize my heart in ways people often don’t. They give me the chance to show my love, patience, and care—and in return, they reflect back my truest self.
Today, my businesses are an extension of that. Through them, I share my heart and live my purpose—for the animals who have always seen me when no one else did.
What fear has held you back the most in your life?
My biggest fear—the one that has held me back the most—is failure. I’ve always been terrified of failing because I worry that people will use it to tear me down. I already carry failures that I try to hide, even though I know anyone could uncover them and judge me. But I’m learning that failure is not the end—it’s a teacher. Instead of letting it define me or destroy my future, I’m working to see each failure as an opportunity to grow.
The truth is, my fear of failure has held me back more than the failures themselves ever could. By changing the way I perceive failure and accepting it as a natural part of life and learning, I’m learning to step out of my own way and move forward with strength.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Where are smart people getting it totally wrong today?
Where do smart people get it wrong? I think it depends on how we define “smart.” If being smart means building wealth or achieving business success, then I believe many lose their sense of morality along the way. That’s one of the biggest issues I see today—people who are intelligent and capable but only look out for themselves, or who do good things only for appearances while acting very differently behind closed doors.
Social media has amplified this problem. So much of what we see is staged or fake, designed to look impressive rather than to reflect someone’s true self. Many people have become “smart” at creating content to gain fame or status, but that doesn’t mean it’s authentic. To me, that disconnect between public image and genuine character is where even the smartest people often get it wrong.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. If you retired tomorrow, what would your customers miss most?
If I were to retire tomorrow, I think my customers would miss not only the knowledge I share, but also the genuine care I have for their pets’ well-being.
