An Inspired Chat with Lylah Healy

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Lylah Healy. Check out our conversation below.

Lylah, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Outside of work, I’m a mom to two wonderful girls, ages 3 and 8. Much of our time is spent at the dance studio, where they both study ballet. Watching them learn, grow, and discover what they love is such a joy. Balancing motherhood and business ownership can be challenging, but it’s deeply rewarding—I get to show my daughters that with hard work and passion, you can build a life doing what you love.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Lylah Healy, the founder and principal designer of Rose Lake Design, a boutique luxury residential interior design studio based in San Diego. We specialize in creating sophisticated, modern organic spaces that feel both elevated and comfortable. Our aesthetic draws inspiration from the California coast and timeless vintage influences, resulting in homes that are layered, engaging, and grounded in natural beauty.

What makes Rose Lake Design unique is our belief that great design tells a story—one that reflects how our clients truly live. We approach each project with a balance of artistry and intention, thoughtfully curating materials, finishes, and furnishings to create harmony and warmth.

Currently, we’re working on several renovations across North County, including a timeless home in Olivenhain, a mediterranean retreat in Carmel Valley, and a stylish lake home near Lake Hodges. Each project is an opportunity to craft meaningful, livable spaces that celebrate both style and soul.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
I believe trust is at the heart of every meaningful connection. Words and intentions matter, but it’s our actions that truly define who we are. I try to show up as the most authentic version of myself—a person who loves learning, embraces growth, and finds joy in creativity. I’m genuinely curious about what inspires others, and that curiosity helps me connect with people on a deeper level. Trust is built through consistency and authenticity, and when it’s missing, bonds can easily break. But when we act with honesty and care, those bonds become stronger than ever.

What’s something you changed your mind about after failing hard?
I used to think failure was purely negative. It can be painful and frustrating, but I’ve learned that when you treat it as a learning opportunity, it becomes incredibly valuable. Failure provides data, perspective, and a chance to course-correct—it can be a blessing in disguise.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
I have to throw some love—and a little shade—at TV design shows (yes, I’ve binge-watched many home makeover shows too!). They make it look like stunning, thoughtful design happens in a single afternoon. In reality, creating a home that truly feels layered, personal, and timeless takes time, patience, and careful attention—it’s definitely not an instant “reveal.”

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I finally feel like I’m doing what I was born to do. By nature, I’m a creative, and I spent many years working in a different field. While that experience taught me valuable skills that helped me build and grow my business, it never satisfied my soul the way design does. Creating spaces is a part of who I am—it’s where my passion and purpose truly come together.
