marian cuevas shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Hi marian, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What is a normal day like for you right now?
I’ll wake up in the morning, have some coffee, attend to some studio administrative work, and then teach. When I come home, I’ll have dinner and be absorbed in art — either practicing piano, painting, or sketching. I’m always doing something with my hands whenever I have some downtime.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m a music teacher and interdisciplinary artist. I believe the most interesting aspect of what I do is blurring the boundaries between different art forms, putting them in conversation with one another. It can be hard to blend different art forms, and so I often find myself working on video and multimedia art. It is a great canvas for blending disciplines as visual and auditory elements combine to create each piece. Working in multimedia art also allows me to explore cutting-edge technologies. My work places me at the forefront of defining how art and technology will shape one another.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
I’ve always been exactly who I am meant to be. The world tried telling me who I was supposed to be, and I didn’t listen. For as long as I can remember, I have been ambitious, fearless, creative, and sensitive. The opinions of those around me do affect me, but at the end of the day, they don’t define me. I continue to forge my own path, and in doing so, I find that I can have it all, despite others believing something has to give. My stubbornness is both a weakness and a strength, and as I have grown, I have learned to choose my battles.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
It really will be ok. Sometimes it may not feel like it, but over time, everything falls into place. The limbo of discomfort and sadness only makes the fields of happiness more colorful and rich. Truly, trust the process. So long as you are doing the work to get where you want to be, trust yourself and trust the process.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My family. Both found family and biological family. I am very picky about who I allow into my inner circle. We are nothing without our community and the people around us. They truly shape us into who we are and influence who we can become. Family is meant to look out for you, to uplift you and love you, not put you down. If someone in your life is failing those purposes, then they are undeserving of the space they take up in your life. There will be plenty of haters and naysayers, so surround yourself with people who support you.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
Doubting myself. Self-doubt is the biggest enemy of creativity. Ultimately, it doesn’t matter if you do things exactly how you want to do them so long as you just put yourself out there and do it. You will not find true growth until you put yourself outside of your comfort zone, learn to be comfortable in discomfort, and learn to roll with the punches. All of that is easier said than done, and a lesson I am still learning to live by. If I had only a few years left, then I’d try my best to go with the flow and accept imperfections as part of the beauty.
