Nicole Novena shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Nicole, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Summer evenings at the beach watching my son surf until dark – it’s pure magic.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hello =), I’m the owner / artist behind CLAY + CRAFT.
I create modern artwork including large scale ceramic installations and unique dinnerware and I recently launched a new collection of canvas block prints.
In addition, part of CLAY + CRAFT’s mission includes sharing our craft, fostering creativity and inspiring others to get their hands dirty with our online learning courses and downloadable pottery resources.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
I remember when I first moved to California back in 2016. I quickly felt inspired by others. I saw the possibilities, the affluence throughout the community…this was the first time I realized I could make money doing something I truly enjoy!
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Yes…it has been a challenging few years. I’m currently working to regain momentum but I often question if I should keep going. Back in 2022, I sold CLAY + CRAFT’s thriving community studio and relocated to Maui so my husband could chase his ambitions. The hope was that I’d eventually establish a studio on Island but between housing struggles, costs, the Lahaina fire and its impacts, we are now primarily living back in California. I’ve since created a home studio and re-launched online but essentially, I’ve had to start over from scratch after working through a few years of uncertain times.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
Beyond the obvious answer being family, health, happiness…world peace…etc.
I think they’d say that I what matters to me is living a well rounded, fulling life. Finding balance within all the parts…from the relationships to recreation to work to well-being.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
Many people have followed along because at some point they gleamed creative or business inspiration from CLAY + CRAFT. So, my hope would be to inspire others to live creatively or authentically.
