Hi Rick, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What is a normal day like for you right now?
A normal day for me starts early. I check the projects my editing team finished and deliver the photos to clients so everything stays on schedule. After that, I answer quote requests, coordinate upcoming shoots, and make sure my photographers have everything they need for the day.
Once the planning is done, I usually head out to shoot. I’m on location from about 9 in the morning until sunset, and during the summer that can be as late as 9 or 10 at night. My days are a mix of client communication, teamwork, and being out in the field capturing homes. It keeps me busy but I really enjoy the flow.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Rick Ryan and I’m the founder of Nova Coast Media, a real estate and architectural photography company based in Southern California. We specialize in high-end photo and video production for luxury homes, commercial spaces, and short-term rentals. What makes our work unique is the level of care we put into every project. We approach each property as a story to be told and focus on creating images that feel alive, inviting, and intentional.
I work with a small team of talented photographers, editors, and creatives who help bring each project to life. Together, we handle everything from on-site production to final delivery so our clients can focus on growing their own business. Nova Coast Media started as a one-person operation and has grown into a brand that partners with top agents, designers, and builders across the region.
Right now I’m working on expanding our services, refining our systems, and moving deeper into architectural and hospitality photography. My goal is to continue raising the standard of visual marketing in real estate while building a brand that feels modern, trustworthy, and creative.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My family saw me clearly long before I fully saw myself. They believed I was capable of building something meaningful even when I doubted my own path. Their faith, encouragement, and belief in my long-term vision have played a huge role in shaping who I’m becoming and the business I’m building.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Yes, absolutely. There were definitely moments when I almost gave up. This industry is hard to break into and it can be very expensive. Between the cost of gear, slow seasons, and the pressure of building a client base from scratch, it felt overwhelming at times. But I kept going, stayed consistent, and trusted the process. Looking back, I’m grateful I pushed through because now I’m able to sustain a great lifestyle doing something I genuinely enjoy.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
I think one of the biggest lies in the industry is the idea that everything has to be competitive or kept secret. Many photographers feel they need to protect their techniques or stay isolated, and I’ve felt that pressure too. But the truth is you gain so much more by connecting with others in the same niche. Working together, sharing knowledge, and building community makes this field far more valuable and a lot less lonely. There is plenty of room for everyone to succeed.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. If immortality were real, what would you build?
If immortality were real, I’d love to build a hotel on a beautiful beach somewhere. I’ve always imagined creating a place that feels peaceful, inspiring, and connected to nature. Maybe one day I’ll make that dream real, even without immortality.
