We recently had the chance to connect with Sam Lopez and have shared our conversation below.
Sam, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Riding my bicycle outside of work brings me joy. A few years ago, after COVID rules loosened up, I started a bicycle group. It’s been mentally, physically and emotionally beneficial riding out with my friends. Rather then meet up at a bar, we meet up on the streets. We’re a low key group of musicians and artists, and like life, we take these rides at our own pace.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am what can be described as a curator. I curate noise music and arts events in San Diego. Noise music is an acquired taste. And initially, was not easily accepted by those unfamiliar with the genre. My shows are safe spaces for artists and audiences to enjoy this style of music without being harassed.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
This might sound weird, but my relationship with media shaped how I see myself. The music I listened to, the books that I read. Or the things I would see on a television. These have been a huge inspiration for me and are reflected in my personality.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Don’t be afraid of success and working hard to be successful. Although I was never held back from realizing my potential, when I was younger, there may have been invisible walls built of my own design. Of course, who knows where I would be now and what choices would have been made if I had followed my older self’s advice. I like where I am at now.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What’s a cultural value you protect at all costs?
The power of prayer. Spirituality and the afterlife. Good storytelling. Our ancestors never die. They live on in our words.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
That I wasn’t afraid to fail. Curating shows that are sold out are great. It’s a great feeling. But I’ve curated shows where only a handful of people showed up. And some of those shows were the most amazing events I’ve ever organized. Noise music is not for everyone. But to have a noise music series at our local libraries was unheard of. The fact that someone trusted me to do something different is a major blessing that I will not take for granted. You have to take a scary leap of faith, and hope that it works. It doesn’t always work.
