An Inspired Chat with Tim Ozbun of Chula Vista

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Tim Ozbun. Check out our conversation below.

Tim, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
I enjoy spending time with friends and family, going out to see a movie, attending a sporting event, eating out at a good restaurant, and exploring new places in the city

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am a professional photographer and owner of Tim Ozbun A Flash Photography. I have been in this business for about 15 years although my interest in photography started during my sophomore year in high school. It was interesting to work with film and in the darkroom. Once I got into college, I decided to get my degree in arts/photography. After college, I started my photography business while also working at a part-time job at the time. I work with many clients doing events, parties, weddings, real estate, modeling, fashion shoots and many more. What I think makes me stand out is that I always try to be creative with my work and that I treat each client as an individual. I learn what kind of things my clients want so I can provide an experience that is custom-made for them. My clients say that they like how I am able to take pictures without being intrusive and they like how my photos capture the ”feel” and emotions of the moment. I am very proud of that.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
A moment that really shaped how I see the world was probably when I graduated from college with a degree in my field. There were a lot of challenges that I went through during that time. I wasn’t sure how I would make it or if I would finish. But the day I received my degree, I knew that I could do anything and that made me feel very proud and accomplished.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Even as a child I was someone that was determined to always do my best and work hard even if it was challenging or difficult for me I wasn’t always the fastest learner, but I always had a strong work ethic and a belief in myself to never give up because if I did, I felt I would be letting myself and others down.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
I think the biggest lie in my industry is that it’s easy work. There’s a lot more work behind the scenes than just snapping photos. People assume it’s just showing up and taking photos, but there’s more to it than just that. It’s getting the right settings on your camera, getting the right angles, tone and lighting and being sure you get the pictures your client wants. I spend way more time editing photos than shooting them. It can take a few days to a week to edit the photos I take.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
I’ve always been a person that never likes to do a job half-way.. I give it my best no matter what. Every job is important and deserves my best whether it’s a half-hour head shot or an all-day event. While I do like to receive praise for my work, the quality of my work does not depend on it.
