An Inspired Chat with Veronica Montgomery

We recently had the chance to connect with Veronica Montgomery and have shared our conversation below.

Veronica, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
At Up A Notch Abilities, we often find that people misunderstand our core mission, thinking that we are a place focused on competition. In reality, our organization is built upon the foundation of community and collaboration. Our goal is not to pit individuals against one another but to bring people together so that they can learn, grow, and thrive collectively.

We are committed to teaching real-life skills that everyone can benefit from, not just within our community but in all aspects of life. By focusing on personal development and practical skills, we aim to enhance each individual’s abilities and open up new opportunities for personal and professional growth.

The greatness of Up A Notch Abilities comes from the diverse and supportive community we foster. Together, we create an environment where everyone feels empowered to reach their full potential, not by competing, but by supporting and learning from one another. This shared experience strengthens our community and makes it a space where everyone is celebrated for their unique contributions.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Well my name is Veronica Montgomery, the founder of Up A Notch Abilities. I created this organization out of a heartfelt desire to recognize and embrace true empathy and compassion for the vulnerable community of disabled individuals, a community to which I also belong. Having lived with cerebral palsy, I understand the unique challenges and barriers that come with it, and these experiences have deeply influenced my mission.

Up A Notch Abilities is truly unique because we are driven by the goal of teaching life skills and providing tools that empower disabled individuals to become or feel more independent within our community. We are not just offering services; we are creating opportunities for personal growth and empowerment that can transform lives. What makes me special is not a desire for fame or recognition, but rather a genuine commitment to give and teach from the heart. I will be married now for 16 years this November, my husband and my two beautiful children are who have been a constant source of strength and inspiration for me.

Growing up was not easy, and I faced numerous challenges along the way. However, those hardships instilled in me a profound passion and compassion for wanting more for my community. It has been these experiences that have helped shape Up A Notch Abilities into a beacon of hope and empowerment for individuals like myself. My journey is driven by a genuine wish to foster an environment where everyone can achieve their full potential.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
A moment that profoundly shaped how I see the world occurred early in my journey with cerebral palsy. Living with a disability has given me a firsthand perspective on the daily struggles and obstacles that individuals like myself face—from inaccessible public spaces to the constant battle for understanding and accommodation in various aspects of life. One particularly impactful experience was witnessing people’s reactions to my disability. There were times when I felt the pain of being overlooked or treated differently, which illuminated the harsh reality of how some lose sight of humanity and empathy when confronted with challenges outside their own experience. It hurts to see how often people fail to show compassion and understanding, reinforcing barriers rather than breaking them down.

Yet, in the midst of these challenges, I’ve also encountered remarkable individuals who have made it their mission to foster change. These people possess a genuine desire to understand and support, demonstrating that empathy and humanity are still very much alive. Their actions inspire and push for progress, shining a light on what is possible when we adopt a mindset of inclusivity and care.

This duality—the struggle against insensitivity and the strength found in allies, has fundamentally shaped my worldview. It has reinforced my commitment to pushing for change and advocating for a more inclusive society. These experiences fuel my passion and drive my work with Up A Notch Abilities, where I strive to create an environment that values every individual and champions the importance of empathy and understanding.

When did you stop hiding your pain and start using it as power?
I began the shift from hiding my pain to using it as a source of power when I realized that the pain I endured often came from the very people around me, those who failed to see beyond their own perspectives and sometimes projected their negativity onto others. A pivotal moment was when a boss once dismissed my optimism, remarking that it was impossible for someone to be genuinely happy every day. In that instant, I excused myself, understanding that the misery of others was not my burden to carry. This moment was an awakening one for me, teaching me that my strength lies not just in my physical abilities but in the power of my words and the resilience of my spirit. I realized that while healing is a journey filled with challenges, it’s also one of empowerment. The realization that I could channel my experiences into positive action and influence was liberating.

Surrounding myself with the right people has been crucial to this transformation. With a supportive village, one that embraces and uplifts, I’ve found that I’m unstoppable. The power derived from a community that believes in you and your potential is immeasurable. It has enabled me to embrace my pain, not as a weakness, but as a catalyst for growth, understanding, and change. This perspective fuels my work at Up A Notch Abilities, where my mission is to empower others to find their strength and voice, just as I have found mine.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What’s a cultural value you protect at all costs?
A cultural value that I fiercely protect is the importance of creating a loving and nurturing environment for family. Growing up, I faced the challenge of not always having the opportunity to experience the warmth and stability of a loving home, which has profoundly influenced my own values as a parent.

I am committed to breaking all generational curses and ensuring that my children experience an upbringing filled with love, support, and understanding. A safe haven is essential for their growth and development, and I strive every day to foster an environment where they feel valued and secure.

This commitment extends beyond my own family to the broader community I serve through Up A Notch Abilities. I believe that everyone deserves the chance to experience a supportive and compassionate environment. Providing such an environment is a foundational part of my mission, allowing others to break free from their own cycles and build a future rich with opportunity and love. This cultural value of creating a nurturing space is something I cherish and protect at all costs, as it holds the power to transform lives and foster true empowerment.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. When do you feel most at peace?
I feel the most peace when I am surrounded by genuine individuals who see beyond the surface. These are the people who truly understand and appreciate the depth of my experiences and the journey I’m on. There’s a profound sense of serenity that comes from being in the company of those who look past appearances and connect with the essence of who you are. Such individuals bring an authenticity and understanding that is incredibly comforting. Their ability to relate and support without pretense or judgment allows me to be completely myself. This genuine connection fosters an environment where I can relax, knowing that I am seen, heard, and understood for who I truly am.

In these moments, I find a sense of peace and belonging that is both calming and rejuvenating. This feeling is an integral part of my life and work, as Up A Notch Abilities aims to build communities where everyone is appreciated for more than just what is visible on the surface.
