Art & Life with Abraham Jiménez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Abraham Jiménez.

Abraham, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I am a Mexican artist. I started painting at age 6, influenced by the exposure I received to big museums by my father who was a painter himself. I was exposed to two different stages, The first was Mexican Muralism; Siqueiros, Rivera, Orozco. The second stage was a movement called Rupture, being a movement opposed to Muralism where modernity and abstraction are present in Mexican Painting. All this had great influence later on in my life and in my studies, making resonance in my career choice which was Graphic Design. It was difficult for me to leave my job as a designer to devote myself entirely to painting, mainly influenced by my parents. My first participation in local biennial art exhibits marked my work, my style and my decision to devote myself entirely to art, giving design up for good. One of the main things that helped give shape to my work was that from the proceeds of my first sale, I was able to travel to Europe and be exposed to the work of the great masters, up close, which confirmed my choice of sticking to the current of realism in my painting.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
My artwork has to do mainly with realistic scenes and basically influenced by fiction movies, pop culture, and everyday life. It’s been constantly brought to my attention how my artwork tends to seem like performances brought to paintwork. Much of my inspiration comes from Mexico City’s daily scene, where people tend to take things and customize and Mexicanize them to thing to life a hybrid copy changing brand names, colors and shapes to fit the collective imaginary of the Mexican. Departing from that, what I do is to create a main Character who will guide the series in the set I am working on at a given time, resulting in scenes, painted delicately, that play with the humor, the bizarre and the absurd.

In your view, what is the biggest issue artists have to deal with?
The main challenge artists face today is “Unique Creation”. Being able to come up with original work in this globalized atmosphere where work seems to look the same everywhere. Contrary to the previous fact statement the second challenge would be to be portrayed successfully and recognized at a global scale.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
I have a webpage where people can see my work, divided into series and also my most recent work. People can follow me on Instagram, where you can be exposed to my most recent work, as well as my processes. And collectively I will have a show in November at the Museo del Pueblo in Guanajuato, Mexico. And in 2019, I will have a show at justmadartfair with the Heartbeats Art Gallery Mexico/Barcelona.
