Today we’d like to introduce you to Alec Bauer.
Alec, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I grew up in Iowa. Drawing since I can remember, art was something I always wanted to make a living doing. The normal 9 to 5, desk job wasn’t in the cards. After a short (very short) time in college for graphic design, I left school and found myself in a tattoo apprenticeship in 2007. In 2015, I moved to sunny San Diego to rid myself of shoveling snow in the winter and mosquitos in the summer.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I make tattoos and art in Pacific Beach, San Diego. I specialize in neo-traditional tattoos and watercolor paintings.
I make art because it’s the only thing I have ever been good at. It’s a medium I can use to express myself the only way I have ever known how to.
The only thing I hope people take away from my artwork is some sort of reaction. Whether that be happiness, sadness, gratification, or any other emotion. I hope that I evoke the same emotions that I feel when I look at someone else’s art or something they create. That’s the whole point of all of this.
In your view, what is the biggest issue artists have to deal with?
The biggest challenge facing artists today is social media. It is a double-edged sword. It’s amazing to be able to see any artist imaginable at the press of a button. But in the same sense, it’s too easy to copy, and in the grand scheme of things, be truly original. There is no luster in seeing a beautiful piece of art knowing that as soon as it hits social media, it’s going to be copied and reproduced. On the other hand, it challenges you to be more creative and bring more originality to your work.
