Art & Life with Alejandro Gatta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alejandro Gatta.

Alejandro, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
Born in Santiago de Chile (1974), I started my artistic career in early 90s as a musician. I’ve been playing in a few different bands until now. I studied photography in mid 90s but I didn’t work in it until 2003. I took some photographic courses in 2010 to improve my technical and artistic skills. I have participated in several art fairs and exhibitions in Chile, Europe and Asia.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
My work looks for embracing the human condition, behavior and psychology, where passion, frustration, love, tension, hate, hope and fear sprout from the image in a rather distant view. In every photo I make, I try to follow the same conductive thread, the enigma, which I think is absolutely necessary. An enigma as a question, an enigma as a mirror.

Most of my work is digital but in a very old school way. Which means that I solve everything in the take. I’ve been working without any technical assistance as a policy in sessions of three or four hours.

Do you think conditions are generally improving for artists? What more can cities and communities do to improve conditions for artists?
Let’s start asking us: what is an artist. When decoration is “mistaken” for art there’s not much to do. An artist must believe he/she has something to say. Needs discipline, work and faith. Anywhere isn’t easy to be an artist, even more now, when everything is so saturated. There’s a fierce competition, but to me, empty at last. Artists need time and thought to generate a solid body of work accompanied, of course, by a serious and clear State or Private arts policy and commitment. Responsibility of artists is to be serious; private and State’s one, to support serious artists without any discrimination.
