Art & Life with Allissa Smith

Today we’d like to introduce you to Allissa Smith.

Allissa, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I fell in love with photography as a kid. I used to line up my Beanie Babies on the dining room floor and take photos of them with film. Fast forward 15 years and I became an intern photographer for a new nightlife photography website that was just emerging. My mentor at that time was James Norton. After 8 months of interning, I applied for a paid position with DiscoverSD (now PACIFIC Magazine) and was hired! My dream of being a professional photographer finally came true. After working with DiscoverSD for a handful of years, I joined a yearlong mentorship program in Los Angeles with world-renowned Sony Artisan, Scott Robert Lim, who is now my mentor. My photography has transitioned from nightlife and concerts to weddings and special events.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
When you look at my photos, I hope to evoke some sort of emotion out of you. Whether you look at a photo of one of the bride’s I’ve photographed and feel her happiness and joy, or you look at a hip-hop artist I’ve shot and you see their energy and the crowd’s response… I just want you to feel SOMETHING when you look at my photos.

Any advice for aspiring or new artists?
Sometimes those closest to you will be the least supportive. Kick those people to the curb! If they don’t support your vision, they aren’t worth your time.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
