Art & Life with Anna Johnson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Anna Johnson.

Anna, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I was a Pediatric Nurse at Sharp Hospital San Diego, after working years in the health care industry, my hobby (photography) started to take over. I was given the opportunity to continue my career as a nurse or to stop and dive in full time as a Photographer. I ultimately decided upon becoming a photographer, because creating beautiful memories for people is something I am very passionate about.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I am a boudoir and wedding photographer. My background in helping people is the driving force that makes me want to do boudoir. There is just something that is so special and unique when a woman discovers that she is worthy and beautiful. We all wear different masks, the mom, the CEO, CFO, the wife (you get my point). Although, these are all amazing masks but they are not something that defines us as women, they are just a small part of us. Boudoir allows women to take an hour of their life, get pampered and just be whomever they desire to be. It’s about letting that inner woman free. Its saying to yourself, “I’m freaking beautiful and I’m going to celebrate being a woman.”.

Do you think conditions are generally improving for artists? What more can cities and communities do to improve conditions for artists?
It’s hard being an artist, many people do not take your job serious. I think one of the biggest problems with being a photographer is the lack of understanding of how much time it takes the artist to create an image. Most think you just pick up an expensive camera and take photos however this is not the case. Yes, good camera equipment can cost upward of 30K but creating beautiful work takes time, education, and tons of practice. The average boudoir session from start to finish can take me around 4-6 hours in labor alone and this is why boudoir can be expensive. One thing I think people should understand is you can’t put a price on making someone feel beautiful and helping them learn to love themselves.

I think one thing San Diego can do is help encourage women to not to try to fit into a mold. It’s so important to love yourself just the way you are after all, you can’t fully love another until you have learned to love YOU first. Ladies, you are beautiful and knowing this helps you conquer all the trials women face daily.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
