Art & Life with Audrey Mae Hernandez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Audrey Mae Hernandez.

Audrey Mae, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
The story of my artistry began humble enough. As a 10 year-old-girl that migrated from a small island called Guam, I knew I possessed a great amount of creativity made evident by my masterpiece sand drawings and plays I would put on with my brother and sisters. It wasn’t difficult to see that I was eccentric and always wanting to explore new challenges in life. What I didn’t know at the time was that those little pockets of creativity helped me find who I am today.

Who am I today? Yes, still that loud-mouth, full-spirited and slightly (emphasis on slightly) more mature professional bridal makeup artist. My makeup artistry began when I was about 14. Making over my friends for their parties that I wasn’t allowed to attend. Charging not a cent for my services and working out of my brightly colored Cadoodle case that held drugstore products, but most importantly held a small girl’s hopes and dreams. I know, it sounds fantastical right? Stick with me, it gets better.

Fast forward to a few years later; after I ditched my artistry to pursue a career in higher education. I picked up my makeup train case again and decided to really commit to my craft by establishing my makeup artistry business. I have done various types of makeup artistry but my pride and joy is Bridal Makeup Artistry.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I am now in my 15th year doing makeup on others and I feel as though with the vast amount of clients I’ve had the pleasure of working with; there is always one underlying inspiration that surfaces and it is my client’s satisfaction. It’s the moment they see their face when we are done and the light that shines from within that exudes confidence and joy are the moments I live for. My clients inspire my artistry, not the other way around. Their stories are my muse. I create because I know hiding deep inside, behind those insecurities, is a wonderful human being waiting to emerge. Even if that confidence is for just one night. When I describe my artistry, I like to use the word collaboration. It then forms MY art into OUR art.

Any advice for aspiring or new artists?
The one piece of advice I would like to share and that I believe in wholeheartedly, is to not be afraid to step into your greatness. Being an immigrant, minority, first generation college grad and a person who decided to run my own course in life, my journey was riddled with hardship and letdowns. Nothing, and I mean nothing came easy for me in my career. I had to really put in my time and energy into my craft that I can now call my business. That type of success takes grit, smarts, trust in the lord and finally working up the courage to step into my greatness. Trust me, there is more great things to come!

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
Currently, I have an Instagram account @makeupbyaudreymae and Facebook at Makeup by Audrey Mae. I am working on revamping my website.

I typically gain my clients from word of mouth and social media. So any way you can share & like my work is totally amazing and I thank you!
