Art & Life with Barbara Taylor

Today we’d like to introduce you to Barbara Taylor.

Barbara, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
My father was an architect and my mother a potter. Art materials were always available and I was encouraged with art lessons as a youngster growing up in Montana. I have kept my hand in various art media through my career as a marine biologist first working with bowhead whales in the high arctic living with Eskimos in one of the coldest marine environments and later working in Mexico in one of the hottest marine environments.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
As a marine conservation biologist, nature has always been an important part of my life. Working with endangered species gives a unique perspective on the importance of cultivating a love of beauty and a love of nature in the general public and art is a good way to do just that.

30 years at sea all over the world gives the creative reference material. Working with endangered species can also be stressful and downright depressing. Painting and block prints have been a creative outlet not only for me but for many that have done prints with me at sea.

How do you think about success, as an artist, and what do quality do you feel is most helpful?
For me, success is having people re-open their eyes to the beauty of nature. Most art is very people-centric. I hope that when viewing my work, people remember the peace and beauty of wildness. There has never been a more important time for us to acknowledge that what will survive our lifetimes is in human hands.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
I often have pieces in the San Diego Watercolor Society’s gallery. People can follow my work on my website. I love to do commission work and can be contacted through that site.

I enjoyed this article about a unique artist, Barbara Taylor. She seems to use her artwork to express a deep passion for marine mammals and their environment.
