Today we’d like to introduce you to Candice Berman.
Candice, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I actually never thought of being a photographer. I was in college, going to school to become a teacher. I always wanted to teach 1st or 2nd grade. I had been working at the bank for a while and started doing a side business on Etsy, crocheting little hats and items for babies. When I started, I became really close friends with a newborn photographer in Indiana, Jennifer. She encouraged me to photograph newborns. I had honestly never picked up a DSLR camera before that and I had no idea about anything with manual mode or anything about photography. Jennifer and I became best friends and one day, her and her husband flew out to California to meet my husband and I. While she was here, we set up a session and she taught me about newborn photography. I ended up getting my BA in liberal arts to be a teacher, but I haven’t used it. I started my newborn photography business and never looked back!
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I photograph newborns and babies. I especially love the newborn stage because the babies are just so fresh and so new. I feel that babies change so much in that first month of life and I believe it so incredibly important to capture those memories. Before you know it, these little tiny human beings grow and won’t be able to fit in your arms the way they do right when they are born. I try to encourage all new parents to hop in for a photo or two before we start the session with just their baby. I hope that people will be able to look through their album of their baby’s newborn portraits and be able to remember how tiny they were, how they smelt, and how warming it felt holding their baby in their arms. I also hope that they will be able to show their grandchildren these images some day and cherish these memories forever.
What responsibility, if any, do you think artists have to use their art to help alleviate problems faced by others? Has your art been affected by issues you’ve concerned about?
Yes, I believe that the role of artists have changed. With all the social media, I feel that there are a lot of more options and choices for people to look at before choosing their photographer. I think it is important to do the research and find a photographer who specializes in the niche you are looking for. If you are looking for a photographer to photograph your newborn baby, I suggest going to a newborn photographer, not a wedding photographer. I have had clients that go to their wedding photographer for their first baby and come to me for their second baby because they realized that they should go to someone who specializes in newborn photography. I have had a lot of training on how to handle newborns and I have a ton of props, hats, headbands, wraps, outfits, etc. especially for newborns.

Candice is a true professional when it comes to working with newborns and people in general. She is a genuine kind hearted person. I’ve had her photograph both my children, and to this day, I am able to reflect back at these photos with joy and admiration!
