Art & Life with Crystal Powell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Crystal Powell.

Crystal, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I am a local San Diego Artist. I specialize in Surrealist oil paintings and I am currently apprenticing to be a tattoo artist.

Over the last 10+ years I have been involved in over 150 art shows ranging from one-night production companies to 30-day gallery commissions to 30-90 day solo shows.

I have worked with many people in the industry ranging from on-call promotion companies, DJ’s, professional artists and groups of underground artists. I completed an Internship with Artist Hyacinthe Kuller-Baron. She was the first female to screen-print on silk and she taught John Lennon how to screen-print.

Each new experience in the San Diego art scene motivates me to further my reach in the community and to continue to exhibit my work in Southern California Galleries and alternative exhibition spaces.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
A lot of my inspirations come from familiar T.V. shows, movie plot-lines and conspiracies from popular culture. Pairing my visions and unique concepts together allows me to draw the viewer into a world filled with innovative story lines and larger than life images/ideas.

I make art to spark conversations among the viewers. I am interested in the fact that any subject can be viewed by two completely different sides and inevitable create two completely different realities in which each holds its own merit.

Creating conversations through my works of art sparks a ripple of both questions and answers.

Recently I completed a five-piece collection that was inspired by a group of five Harley Davidson riding girls who call themselves the “Highway Runaways”. I have always connected with strong female riders on both a visual and emotional level. I created this collection in hopes that some viewers will be reminded of their youth and their connection with the open road. I hope to spark conversation about strong female figures, Motorcycles, memories and personal experiences.

Any advice for aspiring or new artists?
The best advice I can give to other Artists is to actually utilize your spare time.

Anyone can go to school and make art but it’s about what you do in your spare time that set’s you apart from the rest and allows you to really create unique art.

Sure, it’s easy to just relax/be lazy on your days off but it’s not supposed to be an easy thing to reach your long term goals.

I’m not against relaxing in front of the T.V. on my days off but I always try to have something handy to draw or paint with while watching the T.V. You might find that you too can draw inspiration from what you are watching and or hearing in the background.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
Viewers can stay current with my newest art pieces, upcoming Exhibitions, past Exhibitions and older artwork through my website which is www.indirecteffectsart.com, my Instagram @indirecteffectsart, my Facebook account @ Crystal Powell and or my email @ indirecteffectsart@yahoo.com

People can support my work by giving it a like, a share, a follow and as always, most of my artwork is up for sale.

I also do custom commissions so don’t hesitate to contact me via any of my social media outlets or email address. I can combine several ideas and/or photographs together and I can draw custom tattoos.
