Today we’d like to introduce you to Daniel Gonzalez.
Daniel, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I started playing drums when I was ten years old. Ever since I started listening and writing music with limited knowledge, I had at the time.
I grew up in the suburbs of Mexico City, and it was hard to find people to play my music with. That forced me to learn how to play other instruments, and he’ll me find a way of portraying my music somehow. By the time I was 15 I was messing with synthesizers and music production tools, experimenting with sound without really knowing what I was doing, just admiring the infinite possibilities a computer can do with sound.
I got accepted to Berklee College Of Music, and that’s where I fully immersed myself in the world of production and sound design. During this time I wrote and produced over 100 of which only a few ever saw the light of day. These tracks were made with the purpose of me trying to imitate or sound similar to my favorite producers but always trying to add my own voice. It was a hard a strenuous process that took years for me to finally feel comfortable with my own voice, with my artistry. I finally released my first album in 2015 and following that, my latest album in 2018. Both albums were a compilation of some of the many songs I made over the years and that set foot on a solid artistic ground that is helping me take my next steps as a music creator today.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I’ve been producing music for ten years now, and my style/genre has changed a lot in the process. Some artists I have produced have a more acoustic approach while others want that top 40 radio sound to their music.
Nowadays with so much access to music, it’s really hard to pinpoint what style or genre of music an artist is doing. Us as artists are constantly trying to think outside the box so is counterproductive to be put in one once your product is out there.
I don’t really have a specific way of producing, I feel that every song is different and during the writing process, the song speaks for itself and “asks” to be treated in a certain way.
I’ve come to realize that bad songs are harder to produce. When a song is good, a song is good in any way/style you may want to use. Think of Bob Marley or The Beatles who’s songs have been covered in hundreds of different styles, and the heart of the song stays the same.
This thought process is something that comes to my mind every time I write/produce a song. The production style/genre will only embellish the heart of the song.
What would you recommend to an artist new to the city, or to art, in terms of meeting and connecting with other artists and creatives?
I can definitely relate to this. I feel that as an artist we tend to separate from the world and create our own where we can express ourselves freely without external distractions that may affect our creative process. And that’s ok. I feel that just like writing a song or playing an instrument, connecting with other people/artists is a practice, and you need to start small. Building a small community of people that support you or want to collaborate with you in any way. And that is a struggle and it takes time, and it’s part of the patience that you need to have for your work to actually take form and move to higher grounds. But if your work is true and you are true, these things fall into place naturally with hard work and patience so don’t be afraid of showing your work to other people, ask for advice. Learn from their reactions and from your approaches. And most of all, don’t take anything personal when the time is right, you’ll connect with the right people naturally.
