Art & Life with George Coletrain

Today we’d like to introduce you to George Coletrain.

George, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I come from a military family, spent most of my early childhood living overseas. Living & moving around foreign countries as much as we did kind of gives you a different perspective on culture and people. I think it had a significant impact on who I am today. Moved back states side and San Diego in ’98 and I’ve been here ever since.

Ever since I was a little boy I can always have such an infatuation with art; especially music and film. I swear it’s like a different language, that speaks in ways that NOTHING else on this planet can, and if you know you know it. I guess I’ve spent a majority of my life trying to understand it better and use it tell a story.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
‘m one of those annoying people who want to try and do EVERYTHING haha. But I would say that music has always been my first love, and I always seem to have a strong bend towards it. With that being said most of my time now creatively for the past five years has been focused on film and video. I have a myriad of different projects and endeavors that consume my time. I lead the video and film team for a large church in North County. A small team of filmmakers and I work to oversee five campuses weekly and produce anywhere between 15-20 videos a week. It can get quite overwhelming at times, but I love the team that I’ve built there and it’s always an adventure.

On top of working there full-time, I have a side business for wedding films and photography, and also this summer I’ve started up a YouTube channel where I’m hoping to be able to build an audience of young filmmakers hoping to make an impact.

My message from all aspects of my artistic ventures is all the same; I’m hoping to tell a story, a story that will always lead people to realize that LOVE is the only way we can be free. And there is a love that everyone can experience that is unconditional, full of hope, full of grace, full of acceptance and that is only found in Jesus.

I’ve grown up in an environment, and I’ve seen with my own eyes where people of faith are notorious for beating up people and condemning them in a way that is genuinely harmful. And I want to, and I believe with my art I can show people there is a different way

Do you think conditions are generally improving for artists? What more can cities and communities do to improve conditions for artists?
It’s such an interesting time to be an artist at this point in time; no matter what arena. Whether a musician, photographer, filmmaker, poet etc. I think the state of art is very similar, I would say that I don’t think there has ever been more accessibility to art than there is today, as well as it has never been easier to get the tools to be an artist and have a platform. And with consumption being at an all-time high I think it’s very easy for artists to get discouraged and feel undervalued. I think in a lot of ways we are oversaturated and so it causes consumers to not look for and explore for local and developing artists. And I think that’s a way that local communities can really platform their local communities through their local artists. I think that with the rise of the artistic and media consumption, communities that can embrace and develop their artistic scene, the more those communities will be attractive to families
