Art & Life with Helen Divas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Helen Divas.

Helen, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I’ve always had a passion for art, in all categories. If I wasn’t drawing, I was crocheting, making charms out of clay, painting, etc. As I grew up my art became more refined. Although I love tradition art my interests lead me to digital art.

In high school and throughout college I really honed into the craft, working hard and continuing to learn even beyond college because I knew the industry is tough to get into. I still try and learn as much as I can and dabbled in animation and motion graphics. All that hard work payed off as I now work at one of my dream companies, Sony Interactive Entertainment!

was fortunate enough to have a very supportive mother as sister who pushed me to continue my art career. If it were not for them, I wouldn’t be where I am today. I still strive to grow as an artist and continue to learn many new things along this never-ending journey!

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I digitally paint many things. My passion lies in painting animals, portraits and recently, scenes. I love color so ill splash what colors I can in whatever I’m doing. My ideas stem from feelings, and not all feelings are complex. Some days I create scenes with a thought-provoking story, “What is she doing, who is she, etc. etc.” and other days I want an eye-popping image, something you could look at for a long time and not get bored so my interests are ever-changing! Movies, books, comics and art from across the world!

My art is always evolving as I grow as an artist, just like you care for a child I care for my skills that need to be fed with inspiration and learning what I can in order to make something beautiful and fun! I hope that what people take away from it.

I hope people understand that your art can be whatever you want it to. There are no boundaries and the stories are endless. Thought provoking or otherwise, it’s important to have fun.

Artists rarely, if ever pursue art for the money. Nonetheless, we all have bills and responsibilities and many aspiring artists are discouraged from pursuing art due to financial reasons. Any advice or thoughts you’d like to share with prospective artists?
I understand how hard that can be, as I was unemployed for a year following a lay off at the previous studio I worked at. I did side jobs when I could. I did illustrations for a lovely singer Tavia. I part timed when times were rough. I think what kept me afloat was to make time for my art. Do what you have to do to support yourself, if that means a part time job then do it!

Just remember to leave time for your passions, be kind to yourself in your times of struggle. Life happens and no one can stop that, but it’s important to take time, whenever you can, to nurture those passions, go to a coffee shop and sketch a bit, make friends and connect to other artists! Expose your art! Contact those dream companies and get rejected until one day you don’t!

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
I have not set up a shop yet but I hope too in the future! I currently work at SONY as an illustrator and graphic artists, so when projects are released, I’ll be able to update those that follow me on Instagram @helendrawthings on the projects I’ve been working on and until then I’ll be posting my own personal art! They can also visit my website www.helendivasart.com.
