Art & Life with Jason Dodd

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Dodd.

Jason, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
After growing up in La Jolla and venturing off to college at UCSB, I ultimately ended up in LA where I spent the bulk of my career as an Executive Producer for FOX Sports Marketing. After 20+ years in TV, I had the privilege of heading up some of sports’ biggest on air commercial campaigns including numerous Super Bowl’s, World Series and Daytona 500 plus in 2013 we launched both the FS1 and FS2 cable networks.

Having felt that I accomplished a lot in the industry and more importantly wanting to spend more time close to home to watch my two girls grow up, I left FOX in 2014 to pursue photography full time. Landscape and Travel Photography print sales have been our main focus, but we’ve also grown our business into local luxury Real Estate, offering a slew of services including 4k video shoots, drone work and of course our bread and butter, stills.

With the business branching out and growing nicely, last year we decided to rebrand our business into what is now known as PURE Image Company.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
When I first started out in landscape photography I would usually hit up all of the most epic locations, but the problem for me became how crowded and ‘touristy’ these places were becoming. I quickly learned I wasn’t inspired by the shot that everyone else was getting. I also wanted to be challenged to get to a location. A hike, a bike in or even snowmobile in, it just can’t be something you can shoot out of your car window. I wanted to able to look for miles and not see or hear a soul.

Over the years I’ve found some of the work I’m most proud of is from a time or a location I never planned on shooting. It’s ALWAYS everything in between locations that have been planned that end up being the focus of my photography. The perfect light, composition and subject can always be planned, but if you happen upon a shot that wasn’t planned, take the time to get it!

What I hope people take away from my work is two-fold. #1, if you haven’t been to the place I shot, I hope that it may inspire you to go to experience it. Nothing can ever replicate actually going to Windansea, Lake Tahoe or the Columbia River Gorge, but if you have been, that leads to my #2. I hope my photography takes your imagination back to the time that you spent there.

What responsibility, if any, do you think artists have to use their art to help alleviate problems faced by others? Has your art been affected by issues you’ve concerned about?
The role of Artists in photography has evolved drastically over the past 10 years. Some of it good with the amount of stunning creativity that the digital age has brought about, but some of it not so good now that everyone with a phone is now ‘photographer’.

No matter the state of the world we live in these days, the effect on my art will always vary depending on whether the viewer sees it as a photo or as art. Photography will get lost amongst those that replicate it, art will stand the test of time,

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
