Art & Life with Jayne Dion

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jayne Dion.

Jayne, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
My passion for drawing began at an early age, when I discovered my mother’s art textbooks by “Famous Art School.” FAS was a correspondent-based course founded in 1948 by illustrator Albert Dorne and Norman Rockwell, one of many famous artists and illustrators that participated in the development of curriculum. My first published piece was in 1981 at age 14, for the cover of a book of student poetry. Since then, I have been published three additional times for a literary magazine and one article on my work as a set designer/decorator.

Primarily self-taught, I started college at age 45 and earned a certificate in illustration and animation. In my spare time I continue to work on a short animation of my drawing “The Pearl Necklace.”

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I am an artist because I inherently have a story to tell. My story is based on personal life experiences; heartache, physical, mental and emotional brokenness, dream interpretation and the perpetual observance of strangers and their life’s struggles. In lieu of words or song I choose pencil, paper, oils, clay or metal as my voice for narration. I perceive my work as reality-bending, sensual in style, a genre unto its own created as a tie that binds us in a celebration of the resilience of the human spirit.

How do you think about success, as an artist, and what do quality do you feel is most helpful?
The success of an artist is defined by how he or she connects emotionally with their audience and what thoughts and feelings are provoked by this connection.
