Art & Life with June Freedom

Today we’d like to introduce you to June Freedom.

June, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
My musical journey started on the islands of Cape Verde, where I was raised through most of my childhood. It’s said that Cape Verde has more musicians in a square mile than anywhere else is the world, so I guess you can say it’s been embedded in my soul. Growing up I loved to sing Morna, which is an original music genre from Cape Verde. Morna is a matured sound, with haunting creole melodies—a fusion of Portuguese, African, Brazilian and Cuban. When I was 12, I was in a singing competition on the main island. It’s so funny to look back at my young self, belting out such serious songs. I sang ‘Dor Di Nha Alma’ by Ildo Lobo and was chosen to represent my country at the finals in Portugal. It was that moment on the big stage that I knew I had to sing for the world!

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
My artistry and development has gone through so many stages and in so many places. After moving from Cape Verde at 14 years old, I spent many years in Boston, New York City and now LA. All of these places held a new space and phase for my art to transform. Each place and the people I met there, the experiences I had and the energies of the cities helped mold both me and my art. Even though I never stop growing, I have finally found myself in my music. And by finding myself, I mean doing whatever is in my heart and not putting myself in a genre box! Throughout my career, everyone tried to confine me to one sound and tell me that I would later have the chance to explore other genres – but that’s not me! I come from a melting pot of cultures and music and doing me means using all my inspirations!

Any advice for aspiring or new artists?
If I had to give advice to an up-and-coming musician/artist, the main thing I would express is the importance of staying ahead of the trends. Don’t focus on what everyone else is doing. Focus on what’s really true to you, because whatever that is might just be what’s next!

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
I’m currently on all music streaming and social media platforms! Please check it out and continue to follow me. I promise I have something coming for everyone from all walks of life.
