Art & Life with Kat Schroeder

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kat Schroeder.

Kat, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I have been creating art since I was a toddler. I was homeschooled up until high school, so much of my education was done through art, and I had the time to take a variety of classes and camps to grow my passion. Basically, I’ve lived my whole life simply assuming I was an artist. So, naturally, when I applied to colleges, I did so as an art major. I am now at Cal Poly, SLO where I am working towards my BFA in Studio Art with minors in Psychology and Spanish.

While I have been marketing myself as an artist for the past few years, I am just recently getting my footing in the art world – I am starting to participate in art shows, I am developing my online store, and I am beginning to create bodies of work. I am excited to keep working!

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
At this point, my work is still very explorative. I am still learning and developing both technical skills and stylistic aspects. However, I am steadily moving in the direction of figurative painting. I have always been intrigued by people. I am fascinated by the idea of each person being both an unmimicable individual and an indistinguishable part of the human race as a whole.

There is nothing in particular that I hope people will take away from my work, but I do hope that they take something away from it. At this stage, all I hope from my work is that it elicits some sort of resonance with my viewers, whatever that may look like.

Do you think conditions are generally improving for artists? What more can cities and communities do to improve conditions for artists?
I think conditions are shifting and the way that artists and art function is different in today’s society. We seem to be moving away from art as a luxury or sign of wealth and towards a more “art for all” mentality and I love it! Communities can improve conditions for artists by supporting their local artists, it’s that simple. Follow them on social media, promote them to your friends, buy their work if you can, come to shows – there’s so many ways to support.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
