Art & Life with Kia Chun

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kia Chun.

Kia, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I have always been fascinated with photography. What a beautiful thing it is to capture a moment, while many are flying by, and say, “Not this moment, this one stays.” It brings me great joy to provide the avenue in which people are able to freeze their moments in time, to remember them forever. I am a total extrovert, so any excuse to hang out with people while having fun, and pursuing my passion sounds like a grand time to me. I first got a camera in 2013. I was mentored by another photographer on lighting, composition, and all the other fun stuff there is to learn about photography. I have yet to learn everything, which is one thing I really love about photography. As I grew in my skill level and understanding of how to make the sun cooperate with me, I knew I had outgrown my humble gear. I saved up money and invested in new gear that has carried me to where I am now. Being mentored through this whole process was pivotal in my learning and development. I was developed under the wing of another photographer for over two years before I ever took on my own wedding clients. Now, the rest is history!

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I am a photographer! I create images that capture moments in time that would have otherwise slipped away. There’s a mixture of how I get the different kinds of photos I capture. I use a mix of posed and candid moments to achieve an authentic and real feel to the photos. I am constantly inspired by people and nature. People’s relationships and love for each other is incredible and any chance I have to capture that is something I look forward to. I also love nature, like really love it. I often go hiking (always with my camera) to get photos of the beautiful landscapes, wildlife, and plants. When nature and people meet, it’s a beautiful thing.

I hope that people are inspired to love more fiercely and cherish each moment. Photos really give someone the opportunity to cherish and freeze a moment in time forever. We can live, embracing every moment and every person around us, with the same tenacity a photo captures. I want people to be inspired to really live life and take risks and love fiercely. I want people to make memories and go exploring and go on adventures. I want people to be inspired to take action in their own lives. I also want my photography to well up in people real and candid emotions. Whether that be: love, tears, happiness, sadness, passion, or a variety of other emotions I want people to feel and embrace them.

In your view, what is the biggest issue artists have to deal with?
I think one of the biggest challenges has to do with a culture full of instant gratification. People don’t want to wait for art to be created, especially with photography. They want to take a quick photo on their phone to post it to their social media, rather than hiring a professional to come in and create real art. I think this affects different areas of art different ways.

I would also say another challenge is running the business side of things. I love creating the art. Running the business side of it is dreadful, but well worth it!

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
I have a website, Instagram, and Facebook. I am planning on renovating my website this fall but my Instagram and Facebook are typically up to date. Instagram is the best way to see my work!
