Art & Life with Laurie Nicoud

Today we’d like to introduce you to Laurie Nicoud.

Laurie, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I’ve been fortunate to be able to flourish in this industry here in sunny San Diego since I graduated from the Art Institute with a degree in graphic design. My passion for design has led me to this point and it feels incredible. My love for graphic design all started in high school with my Yearbook class elective and now I have been designing for over 15 years.

Over the years I have gained experience working in media where I designed editorial magazine pages, directed photo shoots, and spearheaded branding projects from start to finish. I’ve always had big dreams of starting my own design studio in San Diego. And here we are today… The Creative Clique is a small team of experts who specialize in graphic design, marketing, and branding.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
My art is graphic design. And lucky for me, I get to live the purest expression of my “art” each and every day. Not only is running this business extremely rewarding, but I can say with 100% confidence that its the most rewarding creative outlet I have ever had. Each day I get to design and collaborate with creative entrepreneurs to help their businesses grow. I find joy in helping other businesses succeed, especially here in our amazingly talented community of San Diego. And while half of my business is dedicated to building up local San Diego brands that are making moves, the other half is working with brides.

When I’m not revamping logos and coming up with refreshed fonts and colors palettes, I get to design wedding invitations and reception decor (think menus, seating charts, welcome signs- you name it!). It’s pretty fun having two creative arms of the business- it certainly keeps things fresh. I love taking my creative energy and spinning it into a tangible design. I hope to inspire others through beautiful graphics, words, and even custom signage.

In your view, what is the biggest issue artists have to deal with?
Viewing other artists as competition. My advice would be to focus on community over competition. The San Diego community is an inspiring, supportive, creative hub for growing businesses. I encourage all artists to join networking groups and connect with like-minded entrepreneurs. Reach out to designers you admire, open up to them and invite them out for coffee. It’s so beneficial to collaborate, make connections and broaden your own network.

You never know what doors will open from who you know and who you may end up cliquing with. I’ve experienced the benefit of rich personal + business connections first-hand. The community has an uplifting atmosphere for creatives to mix, mingle, and move mountains.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
You can see our work and support us on our Instagram page: @the.creative.clique. It’s a great way to keep up with what we’re designing, view new features we’re offering and get inspired. Right now we’re obsessed with designing luxury business cards to make brands stand out and coming up with creative new ideas for our brides. Also, we are now hosting creative workshops for business owners to learn, grow, and network.
