Art & Life with Leah Jackson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Leah Jackson.

Leah, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I started drawing since I was old enough to take crayons to the wall. My mom saw my love for drawing grow and she couldn’t help but nurture it. She signed me up for art lessons and then eventually a close friend of ours told us about an arts charter high school that was being built in Miami. From there I learned about LCAD (Laguna College of Art and Design). I’m still currently enrolled and I am majoring in Game Art with an emphasis in 2D Concept. I grew up on traditional painting and drawing but I have a thirst for knowledge and I wanted to know how to transfer what I know traditionally, to the digital world. Bouncing between both Realms has sparked so many ideas. I’m a firm believer in learning new perspectives and sharing and receiving information from others. As an artist, one never feels they are ever good enough. However, there is an endless amount of knowledge with this path that will never leave us bored.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I am an illustrator, concept artist, and 3D Modeler. I make art for games and I love conveying stories through my subject matter. I want to come together with other artists and build worlds unlike our own. Art and video games have been the two tools that have helped me through anything I’ve ever needed to get through. I want people to continue to have characters and worlds that they can respond and relate too. It’s in our nature.

Do you think conditions are generally improving for artists? What more can cities and communities do to improve conditions for artists?
I feel the Arts are neglected in importance. I see talented artists around me constantly being undervalued and underpaid for their work and their ideas. Art and Design can have a lot of impact on people and every industry really. Behind every company, building, movie, book, etc. there were visual people who helped illustrate and design visual elements that helped make those things what they are. We know a lot about World History because of ancient artifacts, statues, paintings, and architecture. We need to support Art Museums, Galleries, and Artists.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
I have an Art Station and an Instagram
