Art & Life with Lesly Su

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lesly Su.

Lesly, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
Seven years ago, I was looking for inspiration for my baby shower cake and after browsing picture after picture on Pinterest I decided I was going to make my own cake. I didn’t have any experience baking and decorating but I thought “…it can’t be that hard!” I made a one tier cake with two baby birds on top and my guest loved who cute it looked and how tasty it was. Soon after that, a friend asked me to make her son’s birthday cake, and then more people started to ask about me and my desserts.

Because I enjoyed so much to bake and decorate, after I had my twins, I decided I was going to pursue this career. I was living in Los Angeles at the time and I enrolled in iCUE.  I started the Culinary Program to learn more techniques in baking and pastry. I was so happy to finally do something that I really loved and achieving my goals. One of them was to work for “Cake Wars”, the TV Show from Food Network and I did. I worked as “Baking Assistant” for four seasons and “Celebrity Cupcake Wars” as well. I assisted celebrities such as Adrienne Bailon and Elle Macpherson. It was such a great experience because I learned so much from it.  Since I moved to San Diego my business have been growing so much and is unbelievable how referrals are so important. I thought that leaving Los Angeles was going to be a big mistake business wise but it wasn’t. Actually, it was the best decision I made as a business owner.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I was always very crafty and I love to draw and paint and I believe that it helped me a lot whit the creative part of the business.  I am a cake decorator who love to bring happiness to the party in the shape of a cake. I make custom cakes, cupcakes, decorated cookies and meringue towers. I get excited to see people faces when they get their order and say “WOW…this is exactly what I had in mind! …” it brings me so much joy. I specialize in custom cakes so when a client calls me to place an order, my mind is already thinking on colors, techniques, flavors, etc. I am constantly looking for inspiration in pictures, patterns, trends and when I have something in mind, I don’t stop until I find the right technique to make it and achieve it in my next creation.

How do you think about success, as an artist, and what quality do you feel is most helpful?
I believe that someone can be successful in different ways, you can have a short-term goal that will make you happy and make you feel successful, like finishing that four-tier cake that you thought was the hardest thing ever. At the same time, a long-term goal (like mine) would be open a cake studio with a space in the back where I can teach people what I do. Just have to be humble and always remember how you started, who helped you and what inspires you to continue with your dream.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
I presented my creations in a couple of shows years ago, but most of my work is on social media such as Instagram, Facebook and my website.  Social media is my window to the world so a “Like” or “Share” really helps me a lot.
